Outside of The Expendables, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone have found it tough getting audiences to care about pretty much anything they're doing. Stallone bombed hard with the insipid Bullet to the Head, and the Arnie couldn't draw any heat for The Last Stand. Both are part of this movement to bring back the old school days of action movie glory, and so far it's been a massive fail. But that's not going to stop them from trying, and Escape Plan has Rambo and the Terminator teaming up for a little prison break.
The first full trailer for the film has been released, and basically it looks like a "put your brain in neutral" genre flick with roles Stallone and Schwarzenegger could play in their sleep. Stallone plays Ray Breslin, a security expert framed and locked up in an inescapable prison of his own design. Of course he'll attempt it anyway, aided by Schwarzenegger as a thoughtful inmate thirsting for a taste of the outside world. This looks like boilerplate stuff, directed without a hint of flourish by Miles Chapman (Road House 2!!!!) but it's always a treat to see these two old war horses on screen together. Maybe it'll be worth it for that reason alone.
Co-starring Amy Ryan, 50 Cent, Vinnie Jones, and Jim Caviezel, Escape Plan opens on October 18th.
