First Trailer for Woody Allen's 'Blue Jasmine' Starring Cate Blanchett

After his comeback with the surreal and funny Midnight in Paris, Woody Allen fell back down to Earth with last year's To Rome with Love. But it's a new season which means Allen is back at it again, gathering another incredible cast for Blue Jasmine, and judging by the look of the new trailer this won't be another love letter to a beautiful foreign city. Instead he's aiming for something a bit darker.

Cate Blanchett stars as a New York housewife who loses everything when her husband (Alec Baldwin) turns out to be a crook. Moving to San Francisco to stay with her sister (Sally Hawkins), it soon becomes apparent that they share a complicated relationship at the very least. A good deal of black humor is found when Blanchett's upscale attitude crashes up against the blue-collar Hawkins, and the suggestion by her friends is that perhaps Blanchett doesn't have her sister's best interests at heart.

The performance by Blanchett looks incredibly strong, and it's good to see Allen going back into Hannah and Her Sisters territory for the first time in ages. Co-starring Bobby Cannavale, Andrew Dice Clay, and Louis C.K., Blue Jasmine opens on July 26th.
