Marvel Targets Aaron Johnson for Quicksilver in 'The Avengers 2'

With so much of the talk focused on both Marvel and Fox's use of the superhero Quicksilver, and any problems that could be creating, little attention has been paid to who will actually play him on screen. We know that Bryan Singer has chosen Evan Peters for the role, one that could be little more than an expanded cameo. Joss Whedon's vision is a little different, as Quicksilver is expected to be an important character in The Avengers 2 and beyond. So a much bigger name is in order, and it's one who is very familiar with Marvel movies.

Aaron Johnson is reportedly the frontrunner to play Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver in The Avengers sequel. Johnson made his big breakthrough in Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of Marvel/Icon comic Kick-Ass, and has since gone on to star in Oliver Stone's Savages and last year's Anna Karenina. He's currently filming Warner Bros.' Godzilla reboot.

Whedon first revealed his desire to add the brother/sister duo of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to the line-up during the Iron Man 3 premiere, confirming them soon after. It was shortly thereafter that Singer suddenly came up with a scene for the character in X-men: Days of Future Past, raising more than a few eyebrows over the decision. Johnson's signing would make him the first new cast member in Whedon's film, and will probably be followed up soon by an actress to play Scarlet Witch. Saoirse Ronan is said to be in consideration to play her. Marvel and Fox can both use these characters under very specific guidelines. Singer can use them without acknowledging their Avengers affiliations, while Whedon will be unable to reference their mutant heritage or their father, Magneto.

On a side note, it's a little interesting that Marvel would choose Johnson, considering his close association with Matthew Vaughn, who is serving as a producer on Fox's X-men films. In a certain way it does look like there's some passive-aggressive elbowing going on between the two studios.

The Avengers 2 opens on May 1st 2015.
