Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara Team Up for 'Don't Mess With Texas'
Reese Witherspoon has done some of her best work when tapping into her deep southern roots. 2002's Sweet Home Alabama was one of her biggest box office hits; she won an Oscar for portraying June Carter in Walk the Line; and she's currently earning strong reviews for her supporting turn opposite Matthew McConaughey in Jeff Nichols' Mud. She's now set to hit the Lone Star state for the new comedy, Don't Mess With Texas, and she's bringing along an unlikely co-star in Sofia Vergara.
The unexpected casting comes courtesy of Universal, who won a bidding war for the comedy spec script by writers John Quaintance and David Feeney, who recently worked on the canceled sitcom Ben & Kate. Witherspoon will also produce the film, which centers on a Texas police officer and inmate on the run from corrupt cops. It's not clear which roles the ladies will be in, but my hope is that Vergara is the one wearing a badge and Witherspoon in an orange jumpsuit.
Vergara will be seen next in The Smurfs 2, and will appear in Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills. Witherspoon is currently filming Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice, and has Atom Egoyan's Devil's Knot coming up. [Deadline]
