Richard Nixon and the Vietnam War in new 'X-men: Days of Future Past' set photos
One of the big questions surrounding Bryan Singer's X-men: Days of Future Past has been how he plans to juggle close to two dozen characters, some from completely different timelines? But another question that hasn't been asked is how Singer will integrate the different time periods into a cohesive story. We know the film will take place primarily in the tumultuous 1970s, with some elements likely to take place in the present and possibly some further in the future.
Singer has again taken to Twitter and revealed two images that hint at the world the X-men are dealing with in the past. One image features a replica of the Oval Office, and shows President Richard Nixon in what Singer describes as a "pivotal meeting". The other image, captioned "Good Morning Vietnam!!!!", appears to be of Vietnam War protestors raging against Nixon's decision to send in troops. The bigger question is the X-men fit into all of this? The original comic book storyline involved Mystique and her Brotherhood of Evil Mutants attempting to assassinate Senator Robert Kelly, with his death causing the apocalyptic future timeline the X-men were trying to prevent. It's possible that Nixon could be the target for the film adaptation, since Robert Kelly has previously been used in the earlier trilogy, played by Bruce Davison. Think he'll turn up for a cameo, somehow? Part of me thinks he will.
Check out the two images below. Starring Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Halle Berry, Daniel Cudmore, Fan Bingbing, Evan Peters and Boo Boo Stewart, X-men: Days of Future Past opens on July 18th 2014.
