'The Wizard of Oz' gets 3D IMAX re-release this fall

We've already had one opportunity to visit the world of L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz, thanks to Sam Raimi's prequel Oz the Great and Powerful. While that film certainly had its problems, and didn't quite reach the box office heights Disney had hoped, it paid great homage to Victor Fleming's 1939 classic film in a variety of ways. But for those who would rather just watch the original again, they'll have a chance to see it in theaters this fall with all new bells and whistles.

In a lead up to next year's 75th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz, Warner Bros. is re-releasing the film in IMAX 3D format beginning on September 20th. The film has been given a complete 3D overhaul, with the audio and visuals given a total upgrade for IMAX's more than 400 theaters nationwide, including museums. That will be followed by a 5-Disc Blu-Ray 3D box set arriving on October 1st, and it looks like it'll be packed with enough special features that any 'Oz' fan will need to have it in their collection. You can pre-order it now here.

Jurassic Park and Titanic 3D re-releases were big hits, but those are more recent films that seemed like logical candidates for a technical upgrade. Is there that same level of audience to see such a revered piece of nostalgia done up in the same way? A 50th anniversary re-release of Cleopatra hit theaters recently and was largely ignored. So will you be turning out to see The Wizard of Oz in IMAX 3D? [USAToday]
