Val Kilmer, Michael Sheen, Jessica Alba, and Tim Robbins Join Will Ferrell's Spoof 'The Spoils of Babylon'
The last time Will Ferrell took on the world of overwrought Spanish telenovellas, it resulted in the hilarious and sorely overlooked Casa de mi Padre. The concept proved a little too out there for the big screen, but Ferrell is obviously not done mining the subject for laughs. Only this time he's bringing it to the small screen, and with Tobey Maguire, Kristen Wiig, Haley Joel Osment already on board, the rest of the cast has been revealed, and it's a stunner.
Michael Sheen, Jessica Alba, Val Kilmer, and Tim Robbins have joined The Spoils of Babylon, which is set to be directed by Casa de mi Padre's Matt Piedmont, sharing co-writing duties with Andrew Steele. The six-episode series will follow the fictional Texas oil tycoons of the Morehouse family. Here's the official description from the press release...
The Spoils of Babylon, a century-spanning saga, chronicles the sexy and dramatic lives of the Morehouse family, led by Jonas Morehouse (Robbins), his daughter Cynthia (Wiig) and her adopted brother Devon (Maguire) who made their fortune in the oil business. The series takes viewers from the oil fields of Texas to boardrooms in New York City, through war torn battlefields and velvet-sheeted bedrooms.
Cynthia and Devon’s unbridled and taboo passion for one another cannot be prevented. Add in Cynthia’s evil son Winston (Osment), her put upon husband Chet Halner (Sheen), and Devon’s new love interest Dixie Mellonworth (Alba), and the booze, the pills, more passion, more pills and the heartache, and you have a mercurial potboiler. Then add in illegal arms deals, international espionage, the Shah of Iran (Ferrell), and two US Army Generals (Kilmer, Steve Tom) and it begins to overflow with boiling liquid in a pot on a hot stove that is operational.
Hopefully this is funnier than the latest season of Arrested Development. Kind of a low bar, really. Anyway, no word on IFC plans to roll out The Spoils of Babylon, but it'll be getting high priority on my DVR when they do.
