20th Century Fox put on quite an impressive show yesterday on the mutant side of things, with The Wolverine and X-men: Days of Future Past mostly flooring an audience they were tailor made for. But the show got off to a strong start with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, attended by director Matt Reeves, and stars Jason Clarke, Keri Russell (awwwwoooogaaa!!!!), and the great Andy Serkis. Serkis came out to a wild chorus of cheers.
The film hasn't been shooting for long, but Reeves introduced a very moody trailer, which sets up that this won't at all be like the previous film. Reeves, who openly talked about his respect for Rupert Sanders' movie, given his film its own distinct look and tone. Certainly its darker and the humans in a more desperate position. We see that humanity has been completely overrun by Caesar and his tribe of 2000 apes, some of which make up his family. Gary Oldman's character approaches Caesar for a meeting to sort something out, and the film ends with a very angry shot of a war painted Caesar surrounded by his followers.
That final image has been captured in the first official still image, and hopefully they'll be releasing more soon because it looks great. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes arrives on July 18th 2014.
