Keri Russell Is Looking For Mr. Darcy In First 'Austenland' Trailer

The period romances of Jane Austen have been adapted numerous times, and have served as the basis for many a modern day tale, but the current trend seems to be to give her works a different sort of twist. In Austenland, the directorial debut by Jerusha Hess (co-writer on Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre), Austen's Pride & Prejudice is the inspiration for a lonely woman to seek out the man of her dreams, one she has no chance of finding on Match.com.

After debuting at Sundance to...well, let's just call the reviews mixed, the first trailer for Austenland has arrived and it looks like the kind of film your wife wouldn't even bother to suggest for date night. This one is for the gals only. The always charming Keri Russell plays a lonely woman so obsessed with the world of Jane Austen that she can't forge meaningful relationships with anyone, so she spends her life savings on a vacation getaway to Austenland, where the Austen time period is faithfully recreated. There she hopes to find  her own Mr. Darcy and live happily ever after. Of course it doesn't go quite as planned, and she ends up stuck between two men who have their eye on her, played by Bret McKenzie and J.J. Feild.

Having seen it recently, I can say there are a couple of nice comic turns, mostly by Russell and James Callis (Battlestar Galactica), but otherwise not much about it amounts to much. Austenland opens on August 16th.
