It's been tough sledding for Hollywood in trying to develop smart romantic geared towards minority audiences, at least ones that don't have the name "Tyler Perry" plastered in front of the title. Genuine progress has been made of late, though, with movies like Jumping the Broom and Think Like A Man proving there is a market for intelligent urban comedies, but then a movie like Baggage Claim comes along and threatens to undo everything.
Paula Patton plays one of those rom-com stereotypes that set the women back a few decades, taking on the role of a desperate flight attendant who absolutely must get engaged before her sister's wedding, so she uses her miles to jet around the country and visit her old flames. She's gorgeous, neurotic, and spacey, and of course she has a virtual Murderer's Row of hot ex-boyfriends played by Taye Diggs, Derek Luke, Boris Kodjoe, Djimon Hounsou, and Trey Songz. The latest trailer is mercifully short, and mostly free of the awful airline puns that plagued the last one, but there's still very little to be inspired by. Patton deserves better, that's all I'll say. She looks like a loon in that picture up there.
Baggage Claim takes off on September 27th.
