'Journey 2' Writers Hired to Make 'Timecop' Bigger than 'Looper'
Universal has been trying to develop a remake of Timecop off and on for awhile, but last year they finally decided to move forward on it, despite nobody really wanting it without the presence of Jean-Claude Van Damme. Let's face it, JCVD is the only reason anybody remembers it other than the wonky plotline. And now the reboot takes another big step by adding Journey 2: The Mysterious Island writers Mark and Brian Gunn.
THR suggests the tone of this version will be very different than the heavily sci-fi influenced original, comparing it to Rian Johnson's Looper but "bigger in scope and ambition". We'll see about that. This one will put the sci-fi elements in the background, telling a "gritty and grounded police story" with the hero on a personal journey.
Timecop was based on the Dark Horse comic and spawned two terrible follow-ups: a short-lived 1997 TV series and 2003's Timecop 2: The Berlin Decision.
