'X-men' Spinoffs for Mystique, Gambit, and Deadpool Being Considered

Before everything went off the rails for awhile, right around the time of X-men Origins: Wolverine, 20th Century Fox was considering a number of spinoffs from their mutant franchise. The forever-developing Deadpool film is the most notable, but there was also a Magneto film planned. With Wolverine's solo film tanking so hard, any thought of further spinoffs was shelved, but now with the franchise thriving again, old ideas are being revived.

X-men producer Lauren Shuler Donner has spoken before about her desire to do a Gambit film, possibly with Channing Tatum as the ragin' cajun, and in a conversation with EW she brings it up again along with other possible spinoffs...

Donner: “There was a regime [at the studio] that didn’t see the worth in [spin-offs], and the current people who run Fox understand, embrace it, and we’re going to do right by it. I’d like to do Gambit. I’d like to do Deadpool. We’ll see. There’s a lot of really great characters.”

Simon Kinberg, a writer and producer on the X-men movies since the original trilogy, thinks a film centered on Jennifer Lawrence's shape-shifting Mystique would be an even better idea...

Kinberg:  “I love what Jen Lawrence has done with her, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo."

For now, Fox and Bryan Singer have enough on their plate before they can start worrying about solo films. X-men: Days of Future Past comes up this summer, followed in 2016 by X-men: Apocalypse, plus a third Wolverine film and an X-force movie directed by Jeff Wadlow. And there are bound to be more announcements as we get closer Comic-Con.
