Superman may have a New Attitude in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'

The audience for just about any superhero movie is split between the purists; those who want their characters depicted as they originally were; and those who recognize changes are to be expected, even encouraged. The biggest example of this fan split was in the reaction to Man of Steel with some not liking the actions he took in that final fight with General Zod. Whether you liked it or not, it does appear that Zack Snyder and Co. will be addressing those complaints in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Here come the spoilers...

Badass Digest continues their slow drip of trivial information on BvS, but there are a few interesting pieces this time. First of all, the film will take place a few years after Man of Steel with Clark Kent and Lois Lane living together and working at the Daily Planet.  The opening flashes back to Bruce Wayne's arrival in Metropolis during the fight with Zod, and he's not too much a fan of the Kryptonian hero. The international community isn't too keen on him, either.

But what's really interesting is that the screenplay by Chris Terrio addresses some of the criticisms about the first film, which mainly were about Superman snapping Zod's neck and the destruction their fight caused to the city.

"When Superman confronts a big bad guy and unravels his plot, he tells the villain, “I won’t snap your neck, I’m going to take you to prison,” an on-the-nose response to criticisms of the first movie"

There's also a fight scene that has Superman drawing the battle away from the city so not innocents get harmed, an action which seems to draw the respect of General Swanwick. So it seems as if Superman has begun to grow into the role of hero in the time between movies. What people forget is that Superman isn't a hero in the first film; he hasn't begun to figure all of this stuff out. That he's evolving into the character we are all familiar with should make the purists happy while leaving enough fresh material for those who like their Superman a bit edgier.

That depends on if this turns out to be accurate, of course. This is based on Terrio's screenplay from a month before production began and some things may have been cut out. I'd be willing to be that "I won't snap your neck" line has been changed a couple of times over by now.  Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens March 25th 2016.
