The Benefits of Being a Somali Pirate? You get a Movie.
Remember earlier this year when it seemed like the world had gone all pear shaped and we were suddenly being overrun by pirates at every turn? Pirates. It's like they were everywhere all of a sudden. You couldn't jump in the kiddie pool without fear of being forced to walk a plank or take a trip down to Davey Jones' Locker. We're talkin' eye patches, parrots, peg legs and puffy shirts. Those Somali pirates, though, they get more than just the usual benefits like scurvy and salt water in their breeches. They get a movie made about them, too.
Columbia Pictures has tapped Billy Ray(Shattered Glass,State of Play) to script their film about Captain Richard Phillips, who was held hostage by a group of Somali pirates just a few months ago. Kevin Spacey is along as a co-producer on the project.
That didn't take long, did it? Typically I'd be all against a project like this, but Billy Ray has written and directed some amazing movies over the last few years. Shattered Glass, State of Play, and Breach all featured some amazing writing and equally impressive acting when Ray has been behind the camera. So this could have some real juice behind it.
Variety has more on the story here.
