Salt sequel in the works, but will Angelina Jolie return?

There's absolutely no reason to do a sequel to Salt. Philip Noyce, who directed the first one, knew it. That's why he told us pretty soon after that he was totally gonzo from it. The film, which featured Angelina Jolie kicking butt as a CIA double-agent, was a modest success earning over $300M worldwide. But critical response was lukewarm, and nobody's exactly begging to return to that boring old world. Unfortunately, Sony could care less, and they are moving ahead, bringing back Kurt Wimmer to pen the script.

Wimmer noted that he had some ideas for the next phase in Evelyn Salt's story,  which I hope include amping up the action and giving us a c. My major beef with the story was that it was so distant.  There was no energy, and Jolie was forced to play a character with little to no emotion. That might have worked for Matt Damon's Jason Bourne, but he's far better at conveying emotion through subtlety than Jolie is.

None of this will matter if Jolie doesn't sign on for it, and reports are she's waiting to see how the script turns out. If we're lucky, she'll respectfully tell Sony to hold the Salt. Thanks to Deadline for the details on this story.
