Doug Liman secures funding for space heist film, Luna

The last bit of news we heard about Doug Liman's long gestating space heist film, Luna, it was back in March when Paramount was getting closer to giving it the green light. Now word comes down from Variety that funding has indeed been secured through a partnership with SkyDance and New Regency , meaning the film is a definite go, with the studio planning to put this one on the fast track. At last report the plan was to begin shooting in the summer, but that could change depending on who gets cast.

Recently added to the list of contenders for the male lead are Bradley Cooper and Chris Evans. Evans has Captain America: The First Avenger due up soon, which could go a long way in determining how hot of a commodity he is. Bradley Cooper is on fire after The Hangover 2's success. Not to mention Limitless proved to a lot of folks that he can actually act, not just act like a moron. He'll be shooting The Place Beyond the Pines this summer, which could cause some conflicts. Jake Gyllenhall had been up for the role at one point, but backed out. Chris Pine, Andrew Garfield, and Emile Hirsch are said to be up for it as well. For the female lead, Zoe Saldana, Rosario Dawson, Megan Fox, Olivia Wilde, Rachel McAdams, and Eva Mendes have all had their names put out there. That's quite the odd mix.

The premise takes a new swing at the classic heist flick, involving a group of renegade scientists who assemble a ship out of black market parts in order to get to the moon and steal a precious energy source. Things get dicey when they must kidnap a NASA employee. Simon Kinburg wrote the latest draft of the script, although numerous others have worked on it, including Liman himself.

I love the idea, which is unique enough to set the film apart from the rest of the sci-fi pack. My only concern are all those writers, which makes me wonder if the concept is a bit too far out to be reined in.
