Sure Shots: Argo; Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy; Kevin Smith
* Ben Affleck continues to round out the cast of his Iran hostage film, Argo, although I don't think we've seen anybody who'll actually play one of the captives yet. None of the three newest additions count as hostages, either. Taylor Schilling(Atlas Shrugged pt. 1), Tate Donovan(Good Night and Good Luck), and Nelson Franklin(Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) have jumped aboard the political thriller, which has Affleck both in front of and behind the camera. Schilling will play Christine Mendez, the wife of Affleck's character. Donovan is an officer in the US Embassy, while Franklin is a reporter. [Variety]
* Universal has pushed back the US release date of maybe the best looking film of the year, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which has the ridiculous cast of Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, Ciaran Hinds, Toby Jones, Mark Strong, John Hurt...and did I mention it was directed by Tomas Alfredson?(Let the Right One In)? Rather than deal with the formidable November 18th spot which would've had it competing against The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, it now settles into a much more comfy December 9th slot where it goes against....New Year's Eve.
* Hit Somebody, the hockey film from Kevin Smith that is supposedly the last movie he'll ever make(yeah right), is one I've been totally unable to get into. First of all, it's hockey, which is a sport that sucks major ass. And then I feel like Smith is moving further and further away from the style that made me love his work to begin with. The film is a 2-parter, telling the story of an up 'n coming hockey star(Nicholas Braun). Smith has revealed the titles for both halves of the story, with the first one titled Hit Somebody: Home, and the other Hit Somebody: Away. In a strange move, he also plans for the first part of the film to be PG-13 and the second part rated R. Why? I suppose the lead character will be more grown up at that point, and can engage in more adult activity. [Slashfilm]
