Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter author planning Beetlejuice sequel

Beetlejuice is one of the most overrated movies ever. There, I said it. Hilarious when I was a ten years old, as an adult it's a pretty tired film that throws everything it can against the wall to try and be funny. It mostly fails, with the only real plus being Michael Keaton's outrageous performance. Despite my feelings towards it, does it need a sequel or a remake after all these years? Hell no, but it looks like we're getting one anyway, from the author of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Deadline reports that Seth Graham-Smith and his partner David Katzenberg, two of the hottest names in Hollywood right now, have struck a deal with Warner Brothers on a two film pact that includes a proposed sequel to the beloved 1988 dark comedy. Graham-Smith is on fire right now, with both of his books, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, being adapted into feature films right now. He also did some scriptwork on the Tim Burton directed, Johnny Depp starring remake of Dark Shadows.

The plan isn't for a direct remake, but more of a sequel/relaunch that will be "advancing the storyline of the original". That sounds sorta like what Judd Apatow is doing with his Knocked Up spinoff, moving ahead in years to the point where it's like starting fresh.

You can't make a Beetlejuice movie without Michael Keaton in there somewhere, but with that said I don't want to see a passing of the torch, either. This just sounds like a painfully bad idea, one that seems like a surefire disaster. Maybe if we say Beetlejuice's name three times he'll appear and make this whole thing go away?
