Anthony Mackie in talks to join Michael Bay's muscular crime flick, 'Pain and Gain'

With the Academy Award coming up this weekend it got me thinking, "Can an Oscar nomination be far in Anthony Mackie's future"? By all rights he should have been nominated for The Hurt Locker a couple of years ago, but it signaled his real arrival on the Hollywood map after years of great performances in movies like 8 Mile and Half Nelson. After a mixed bag of a 2011, Mackie's 2012 is looking spectacular. After appearing in the Sam Worthington thriller, Man on a Ledge, he'll turn up in two of the year's most anticipated films in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and Gangster Squad.

Now you can add one more eagerly awaited film to his list, as Variety reports Mackie is in talks to join Michael Bay's crime flick, Pain and Gain. Based on a true story, the film stars Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg as a pair of bodybuilders who run a criminal ring down in Florida. After kidnapping and leaving for dead a rich businessman, the plan goes belly up when he survives and hires an investigator to track them down. Rob Corddry, Ed Harris, and possibly John Turturro will co-star. Mackie's role would be as a good-hearted bodybuilder working out at the same gym, who joins their twisted scheme.

Mackie's not likely to win any Oscars for this role, either, but his time is coming.  Production on Pain and Gain begins this spring.
