We're finally starting to learn more about the films that have so rapidly changed Terrence Malick from a guy who makes one movie every ten years, to one who now has a handful just around the corner. The suddenly prolific director has two lined up to shoot this year, featuring mostly the same cast, and as usual covered by the thickest blanket of secrecy this side of the CIA. Last year we caught footage of Malick shooting some footage for Lawless at the Austin City Limits music festival, learning that the film would in some way be centered on the music industry. Now an official logline from production company FilmNation reveals another facet of the story.
“Two intersecting love triangles. It is a story of sexual obsession and betrayal set against the music scene in Austin, Texas.”
Set in Austin? Does that mean when filming officially kicks off later this year Malick will be returning to the Austin City Limits festival? It seems likely, as it was later revealed what was shot before was merely pre-production work, with the real thing set to kick off in September, according to one of the film's stars, Rooney Mara. She'll be featured with an amazing cast including Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Ryan Gosling, Natalie Portman, and Haley Bennett. All those folks walking around Austin City Limits when it begins this October? Can I get a ticket now?
As for Malick's other film, Knight of Cups, it's slated to shoot this summer. Earlier this month I speculated that there is so much crossover between the casts one would have to conclude the two movies are connected somehow. While that hasn't been confirmed, I'm sticking to that theory. Whatever the case, this is Malick doing something we haven't really seen from him before, and that's reason enough to get excited.
