Benedict Cumberbatch joins Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep in 'August: Osage County'
Although we may not be seeing or hearing much from Benedict Cumberbatch in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey where he'll voice the dragon Smaug, we'll have plenty of chances to see him in the months following. Not only is he set to play the villain(Gary Mitchell!!!) in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek sequel, but he's also part of the incredible ensemble for Steve McQueen's Twelve Years A Slave. Now he's joining the cast of August: Osage County, which boasts a cast that may be even better.
Written and directed by John Wells, the film is an adaptation of Tracy Letts' award-winning play, and stars Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Abigail Breslin, Chris Cooper, Juliette Lewis, and Margo Martindale. The story centers on the women of the Weston family, who have all gone their separate ways until a family crisis sends them back home to Oklahoma and into the home of the dysfunctional mother who raised them. Cumberbatch should fit in nicely amongst this talented group, playing the "sensitive" son to Martindale's character.
Production gets underway next month, and I'm pretty sure we can count on August: Osage County being in next year's Oscar race. [THR]
