David Fincher won't direct 'Cleopatra' with Angelina Jolie

Remember that big budget, 3D version of Cleopatra that Sony has been trying to get moving on for a couple of years now? With Angelina Jolie long attached to star, the film initially looked like a project for James Cameron, before he bailed and Paul Greengrass was in the driver's seat.  With that failing to get the ball rolling, David Fincher took over in March of 2011, and Eric Roth started hammering out a new script. While news has been pretty quiet ever since, Fincher continued to talk about his vision for the film as recently as last December.

None of that matters now, as Vulture notes that Sony is now looking for someone new to fill the director's chair. While no offers have been made to anybody yet, Ang Lee is high on their list of possibilities. Lee would actually make a logical choice, as he's always had a knack for presenting strong female characters. The film would be based on Stacy Schiff's novel, Cleopatra: A Life, which tells her story from a distinctly female perspective. It's more rare than you think.

Is it possible that Fincher and Sony's constant squabbles over The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo have soured their relationship somewhat? And if that's the reason Fincher stepped down, how would that effect his participation in The Girl Who Played with Fire? I'm interested in seeing how this all plays out.
