The Sunday Drive 8/26/12
3. ParaNorman
Gorgeously detailed, funny and more than a little spooky, ParaNorman is the best animated horror for kids since Monster House. Actually, that would make for one heck of a double feature.
2. Robot & Frank
Hitting wide release this week is Robot & Frank, a great little sci-fi comedy starring Frank Langella as an aging jewel thief who finds new life planning heists with his robot partner. Langella is as reliable as ever, and the film balances insightful humor while exploring the effect of technology on the older generation. A must see.
1. Compliance
The scariest movie you'll see all year doesn't have a drop of blood in it. Directed with cold, detached precision by Craig Zobel, Compliance tells a disturbing, uncomfortable true story of what happens when our trust in authority figures is exploited.
DVD Pick of the Week: Bernie
Much like Compliance, Bernie is another unbelievable true story centered on a heinous act. Jack Black gives the strongest performance of his career in the title role, a man so loved in his little Texas town that everyone forgives him when he murders a hated, rich widow(Shirley MacLaine). Richard Linklater slices and dices the myth of small town America, while Matthew McConaughey scores as the town prosecutor and the only guy who wants to see Bernie behind bars.
