Having spent four seasons in the rebooted Battlestar Galactica as the tough-as-nails "Starbuck" Thrace, Katee Sackhoff has continued to cultivate her tough persona with stints on 24, Longmire, and Vin Diesel's upcoming Riddick. But does she qualify as one of today's top female action heroes? I think it's debatable, but the folks behind the upcoming "female Expendables" film disagree, as Sackhoff is the latest to sign up.
Variety confirms Sackhoff will join the previously announced Gina Carano(Haywire) in the still-untitled project being put together by the folks at 1984 Private Defense Contractors. Dutch Southern is providing the script, but there's still no director in place. New names for the ensemble are expected to be announced soon.
To me, Sackhoff's joining indicates that maybe the plan isn't really to reach too deep into the past, preferring to look towards the next generation of female heroes. We might see one or two veterans, but it's looking more likely that a young group is what's being sought. Here's hoping they reach out to kick-ass chicks like Summer Glau, Moon Bloodgood, or Emily Browning if that is truly the case.
I can't help but think that a woman director may be sought for the job, as well. So other than Kathryn Bigelow, who would make for a good fit? Punisher: War Zone director Lexi Alexander seems like a good fit, having obvious genre experience. Catherine Hardwicke has been making some interesting choices after directing Twilight and the disastrous Red Riding Hood. A move into something like this wouldn't be all that shocking to me. One pick that I don't think many are thinking about but could arguably make the most sense is Karyn Kusama, who directed Charlize Theron in Aeon Flux and Megan Fox in Jennifer's Body.
