New trailer for David Chase's 'Not Fade Away' with James Gandolfini

How does one go about ending one of the most iconic(and somewhat overrated, in my opinion) shows ever in The Sopranos, and begin the process of fashioning that into a successful feature film career? If you're David Chase the answer is simple: root the film in many of the same Italian-American sensibilities while bringing Tony Soprano himself, James Gandolfini, in the most showy role. Chase's directorial debut, the rock 'n roll drama Not Fade Away, just played at NYFF and now the first trailer has emerged.

So far the early buzz has been somewhat mixed, with many stating that the film drags from the start and never really picks up. I can see elements of that in the trailer, which looks pretty straight forward and not particularly significant.  Set in 1960s New Jersey, the film stars Jack Huston, Will Brill, and John Magaro as three Italian kids with dreams of being famous like their idols, The Rolling Stones. James Gandolfini looks fearsome as the criticizing father who can "give a crap about music" and worries his son is a little light in the loafers(literally). Pretty standard stuff, really, although having 'Parachute Woman' playing throughout certainly helps.

Co-starring Bella Heathcote, Lisa Lampanelli, and Brad Garrett, Not Fade Away opens on December 21st. It'll be playing here at the Virginia Film Festival on November 1st, where I should be checking it out for myself. Watch the new trailer below.....
