New trailer for 'The First Time' with Dylan O'Brien and Brittany Robertson

A study of two very different ways to approach the subject of teen love, and specifically losing one's virginity. The Perks of Being a Wallflower took a more measured, dramatic approach that showed some of the awkwardness of those first unexplainable feelings. On the other hand, Jon Kasdan's The First Time has a guy falling off a roof and checking his groin for damage.

To be fair, the new trailer for The First Time isn't bad, but it doesn't appear to be doing anything especially novel. The film stars Dylan O'Brien(Teen Wolf), Brittany Robertson(Dan in Real Life), Victoria Justice(Fun Size), and Craig Roberts(Submarine) in a story that follows two teenagers over the course of a single weekend. Dave(O'Brien) and Aubrey(Robertson) meet totally at random and embark on a night that begins with casual talk, but slowly grows into something intimate and unexpected over time. I like many of the interactions between the two leads, which has an authentic clumsiness to it that reminded me a little bit of Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist. My biggest problem is when it gets away from that and starts to look like a more conventional teen comedy. The supporting cast is solid with help from Christine Taylor, James Frecheville, and Maggie Elizabeth Jones aka the adorable little girl from We Bought a Zoo.

Kasdan couldn't find a steady tone for his directorial debut In the Land of Women, and it remains to be seen if he can do it with The First Time. We'll find out when the film opens on October 19th.....
