Fox and Universal planning sequels to 'The Heat' and Kevin Hart's 'Ride Along'

Who says a film needs to be a success before a sequel gets green lit? Heck, who says a film even needs to...I dunno...be finished shooting before plans for a follow-up get underway? Universal and 20th Century Fox are feeling pretty confident about a pair of their upcoming comedies, The Heat and Ride Along, and have already hired writers to pen the sequels.

Considering The Heat boasts the bankable duo of Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, Fox has every reason for confidence, which is why they've gone ahead and brought back Katie Dippold to start work on a script before the film opens on June 28th.

But Ride Along is a different story, as it doesn't come out until next January and doesn't have much of a profile at this point. Directed by Tim Story, it stars Kevin Hart as a slick-talkin' wannabe cop, with Ice Cube as his girlfriend's police officer brother, with Hart trying to prove himself worthy of being her husband. Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi have been hired by Universal to pen a sequel that could go into production soon after the film opens. Hart is clearly a star on the rise after Think Like A Man, but this seems premature at best.

Of course, this is all contingent on both films being a success, so we'll just have to wait and see how far this goes.
