Summit Entertainment is taking a big risk with Red 2 by dropping it into the thick of a busy summer. The first film took a lot of people by surprise, pulling in $200M (most of it from overseas) and continuing the trend of successful older-skewing genre films. With Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren in the role of retired CIA agents, it certainly wasn't lacking in star power, but it made a splash during a quiet fall season when the only competition was Jackass 3D. So what's inspired all of the studio confidence to put it up against the summer's biggest blockbusters?
After revealing a number of character posters all week, the new Red 2 trailer is here, and it looks like another fun if forgettable ride. This time around, Frank Moses (Willis) finds himself on the run when MI6 orders his termination, even going so far as to hire his old friend Victoria (Mirren) to do the job. This trailer introduces many of the new faces, including Anthony Hopkins, Lee Byung-hun, and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Frank's dangerous former flame.
Red 2 will face off against The Conjuring and fellow comic book film R.I.P.D. on July 19th.
