Tops at the Box Office: 'Pain & Gain' benches $20M debut, 'Iron Man 3' earns $195M overseas
1. Pain & Gain- $20M
It's been eight years since Michael Bay has directed a film outside of Transformers, and the success of the trilogy gave him the bargaining power to convince Paramount to bankroll Pain & Gain. It's a project he had been wanting to do for awhile, and with a budget of roughly $25M, he looks to have made the investment somewhat worthwhile. Opening to $20M, the film out-muscled some scrawny competition for the top spot, although it should be noted this can hardly be considered a smash success. Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson have been producing $100M hits left and right, so by comparison this comes off as a pretty weak number. It should still do well enough to earn a tidy profit, but with Iron Man 3 and the real beginning to the summer season on the way, it probably won't be around for too long.
2. Oblivion- $17.4M/$64.7M
Slipping 52% from last week, it's looking like Tom Cruise's latest starring vehicle is going to do the bulk of its business internationally, where it has already brought in over $130M.
3. 42- $10.7M/$69.1M
Holding on strong with a minor 39% drop, 42 may come within shouting distance of the top-grossing domestic baseball film ever, A League of Their Own.
4. The Big Wedding- $7.5M
Once pegged as a potential awards contender due to star-studded ensemble that includes Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Katherine Heigl, Susan Sarandon, and Amanda Seyfried, The Big Wedding appears to have been left at the altar by audiences. Suffering from a marketing campaign that couldn't find a way to make this look like just your standard, bloated rom-com, there's little chance the film will come close to recouping its $35M budget, most of which probably went to paying some hefty salaries.
5. The Croods- $6.6M/$163M
6. G.I. Joe: Retaliation- $3.6M/$116.4M
7. Scary Movie 5- $3.45M/$27.5M
8. Olympus Has Fallen- $2.8M/$93.1M
9. The Place Beyond the Pines- $2.7M/$16.2M
10. Jurassic Park 3D- $2.3M/$133.1M
Next week will pretty much be owned by Marvel and Iron Man 3, but they got a jump on their summer dominance by releasing the film internationally a week early. So far the results are extraordinary, with the film raking in $195.3M. Assuming it keeps at this pace, and does the expected numbers here in America, we may looking at Marvel/Disney's second $1B grossing film in two years.
