Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch confirmed for 'The Avengers 2'

So maybe Joss Whedon wasn't pulling our leg, after all? Last week, he dropped a not-so subtle hint that the brother/sister duo of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch would be part of The Avengers 2. He never came right out and said it, but fans were easily able to figure out that he meant the two children of the mutant master of magnetism, Magneto. It turns out that Whedon wasn't lying, as EW confirms both characters will be part of Earth's Mightiest Heroes when the film opens in the summer of 2015.

When asked about it, Marvel President Kevin Feige would neither confirm or deny the story, suggesting that Whedon's script could change six months from now. He's not wrong, as we're still a long way from the film ever rolling in front of cameras. Early drafts of The Avengers included a number of characters who ended up not making the final cut (like The Wasp), so we could see a significant amount of change as Whedon figures out his approach.

Pietro and Wanda Maximoff are two of the earliest members of the Avengers, joining the team in issue #16 back in 1965. They started out as villains, joining their father's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, but eventually became heroes and trusted members of both the X-men and the Avengers. Because they walk in both worlds, the characters are free to be used by Marvel and 20th Century Fox, who own the film rights to the X-men. Marvel is able to use them but not mention their mutant heritage, while Fox can use them and not mention their Avengers ties.

In a related story, Robert Downey Jr. has fulfilled all of the obligations on his Marvel contract, but is currently negotiating to appear in The Avengers sequel. As for future Iron Man films, there's nothing in the cards right now, and I'm of the firm belief we won't see any more. At least not for a good little while.

So for now at least, you can expect to see Quicksilver's super-speed and Scarlet Witch's chaos magic in The Avengers 2 on May 1st 2015.
