Zoe Saldana and Kevin Feige talk 'Guardians of the Galaxy'; 'Ant-Man' needs a rewrite

Iron Man 3 is currently smart-bombing the Hell out of the box office, and just as Tony Stark is a forward thinker, it's time to start looking ahead to what Marvel has in store. One of their biggest Phase 2 gambles is Guardians of the Galaxy, which follows a quirky team of intergalactic heroes based on one of Marvel's more obscure comics.  In keeping with the offbeat tone of it, the cast is an oddball assortment consisting of Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Michael Rooker, Ophelia Lovibond, and Lee Pace, along with Slither director James Gunn. In an interview with EW, Marvel President Kevin Feige talked a little about how he plans on making the team, which consists of the talking Rocket Raccoon and the plant creature Groot, accessible to audiences...

Feige: “It’s a huge story on a massive canvas. We can take it to all those crazy places as long as all the characters respond in an emotionally truthful way. That’s why I believe people are going to respond to Chris Pratt and to an alien ZoĆ« Saldana—because they did respond to that one time before [with 'Avatar']. And to a tree and a raccoon who, it is certainly our intention, will steal the whole movie.”

As for how the film will fit into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, Feige suggests that there may not be any direct links....

Feige:  "Guardians takes place within the continuity of the [other movies] but it’s on the other side of the universe. We’ve always wanted to do a space movie. I’m obsessed with Star Wars, I’m obsessed with Star Trek.”

Zoe Saldana was cornered at the London premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness, and was asked about her role as the green-skinned badass Gamora, arguably the most lethal member of the team. She had nothing but high praise for Gunn, and revealed that she hadn't heard of Guardians of the Galaxy before she won the role...

Kicking off Marvel's Phase Three is Edgar Wright's Ant-Man, and believe it or not it's the film that has been in the works the longest. In fact, it's been around since the Marvel Cinematic Universe was just a twinkle in fanboys' eyes. We first learned about it back in 2006 (!!!), two whole years before Iron Man hit theaters. Because of that, the script by Wright and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) is need of a little tweaking to make sure it plays nicely with the rest of Marvel's big screen heroes...

Feige: "Frankly, now we have to re-write it to put it a little bit more into the [Marvel Cinematic Universe] because it was written before it existed."

Fans have been throwing around a lot of names to take on the title role, with Nathan Fillion (Firefly) seeming like the most popular choice. Feige says casting will get underway later this year, but they don't have any clear ideas on who they're going to target....

Feige: “We’ve talked about various names over the past eight years but as you can imagine they keep changing as time goes by. But towards the end of this year, we’ll buckle down and start casting and start refining the script, which is great and which is very Edgar. He has done a great job being incredibly true to the comics but is putting his own spin on it, so we’ll be drawing on multiple mythologies for this one.”

It's that "multiple mythologies" bit that is most interesting. There have been a few characters under the Ant-Man mask, and Wright has said his script includes both Hank Pym and Scott Lang.

EW has also released a new image from Thor: The Dark World, and what looks like concept art from Captain America: The Winter Soldier. You can check those out below.

Ant-Man hits theaters on November 6th 2015. Guardians of the Galaxy takes off on August 1st 2014.
