Alicia Vikander Joins 'Ali & Nino'; Mira Nair Helms 'Bengali Detective'; John Moore Directs 'The Englishman'

* A Royal Affair and Anna Karenina breakout Alicia Vikander is adding another period drama to her resume, as she's in talks for an adaptation of Kurban Said's 1937 novel, Ali & Nino. Directed by Asif Kapadia (Senna) and written by Christopher Hampton, the story is set during during the Bolshevik Revolution and follows the romance between a Muslim royal prince and a Georgian princess. Production begins next year, but Vikander has a lot on her plate with The Seventh Son, The Fifth Estate, Ex Machina, Tulip Fever, and The Man from UNCLE coming up. [ScreenDaily]

* A director I love and was happy to see bounce back a little bit this year was Mira Nair, who coaxed an award-worthy performance out of Riz Ahmed in The Reluctant Fundamentalist. She's lined up her next project, the crime drama Bengali Detective, and it's promising right off the bat because it reteams Nair with her Monsoon Wedding screenwriter,  Sabrina Dhawan. Based on the documentary by Phil Cox (which premiered at Sundance a couple of years ago), the film centers on a Calcutta detective who dreams of dancing on Indian TV. The project is set up at Fox Searchlight, who have found success with recent films set in India, Slumdog Millionaire and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. [Variety]

* Outside of his remake of The Omen, John Moore hasn't shown much as a director, or at least efforts like Max Payne and A Good Day to Die Hard didn't turn out so well. He's still very much in demand for the action genre, and he'll take on another one in The Englishman. Set in Africa and based on ex-SAS soldier Will Scully's 1997 autobiography, it recounts an emergency evacuation of civilians out of Sierra Leone during a military coup. [Variety]
