Luke Evans, Olivia WIlde, and Cillian Murphy to Star in Ben Wheatley's 'Free Fire'

With wildly original films like Sightseers, A Field in England, and Kill List under his belt, Ben Wheatley has quickly established himself as a director with a unique voice, and some pretty big names are starting to take notice. His upcoming film High-Rise has an A-list cast (Tom Hiddleston, Sienna Miller, Elisabeth Moss), and now he's gathered an equally great lineup for his next project.

Wheatley will direct Free Fire, an action film starring Luke Evans, Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer, Olivia Wilde, and Michael Smiley. Inspired by some of his favorite crime flicks like The Big Sleep, Le Samourai, The French Connection, Goodfellas and others, the story takes place in 1978 Boston and follows "Justine, a woman who has brokered a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two Irishmen (Murphy, Smiley) and a gang led by Hammer and Evans who are selling them a stash of guns. But when shots are fired in the handover, a heart stopping game of survival ensues."

Sounds amazing, and with Wheatley at the helm it's guaranteed to be more than the synopsis suggests. Filming is to begin next spring.  [Screen Daily]

New Trailer for Ben Wheatley's 'A Field in England'

The offbeat films of Ben Wheatley, such as Kill List, Sightseers, and Down Terrace, have quickly made him one of the most popular filmmakers. No doubt his fans have been anxiously awaiting his latest, A Field in England, which premiered last year in Toronto. Fortunately they won't have to wait much longer as it's only a few weeks away hitting theaters. A new trailer and poster have been released for the eccentric film, set in 1648  and centering on three soldiers led by an alchemist into a mysterious field.  They discover the horrors of war are nothing compared to those of the mind.

Weird? Yes, and the specific time period should make this Wheatley's strangest movie yet. A Field in England hits VOD and theaters on February 7th.

New poster and trailer for Ben Wheatley's 'A Field in England'

Even if you weren't exactly thrilled by Ben Wheatley's first three features, Down Terrace, Kill List, or the killer campers comedy Sightseers, there's no denying the director has amassed a loyal following in a very short period of time. His latest film, the "psychedelic" A Field in England, isn't playing at Cannes like Sightseers did last year, but that may be because it already has a fairly ambitious, multi-faceted rollout plan. In the UK the film open in theaters, hit VOD, and be released on DVD/Blu-Ray all on the same day, not to mention airing for free(!!!) on television.

Here in the U.S. we have a little while to wait for our theatrical and VOD release, courtesy of Drafthouse Films, and we've got a new trailer and poster for the film, offering the first footage we've seen of it yet. Starring Brit comic Julian Barratt, Michael Smiley (Kill List), Reece Shearsmith, the film follows a group 17th century English Civil War deserters who are forced by an alchemist to search for a hidden treasure in a vast, magical mushroom field, where they begin to succumb to nightmarish forces.

Look for A Field in England to open later this year, but you can check out Wheatley's Sightseers in theaters right now.
