Julia Roberts Remaking 'Batkid Begins'; Adam Sandler Casts 'Ridiculous 6'; Margot Robbie has 'Dangerous Odds'

Last weekend the inspirational documentary Batkid Begins made its debut at the Slamdance Film Festival here in Park City, and already there's good news about the movie's future prospects. Before the premiere even rolled, Julia Roberts had signed on to produce and star in a narrative remake of the film which centers on 5-year-old Miles Scott, a leukemia patient whose Make-A-Wish to be Batman for a day was granted. It became a national sensation with millions following along via social media, and thousands of San Francisco residents participating. As for Roberts' role, she could play Patricia Wilson, head of the San Francisco Make-A-Wish chapter.

Remember that awful-sounding comedy Western Adam Sandler was developing called Ridiculous 6? Paramount chose to have nothing to do with it, but now that Sandler has struck a multi-picture deal with Netflix the film is back on and has rounded up a huge cast of people you wouldn't normally pay to see. Nick Nolte, Blake Shelton, Whitney Cummings, Steve Buscemi, Rob Schneider, Dan Aykroyd, Will Forte, Nick Swardson, Terry Crews, Jon Lovitz, Vanilla Ice, Luke Wilson, Steve Zahn, Danny Trejo, Chris Parnell, and Lavell Crawford, basically all of Sandler's pals, will star in the film which he co-wrote with Tim Herlihy. It centers on "a man who grew up as an orphan among an Indian tribe." Yuck, but at least it's on Netflix and should be easier to avoid, right? [TheWrap]

And the super red-hot Margot Robbie, who is here at Sundance for Craig Zobel's Z for Zachariah, has landed another gig. She'll star in the blandly titled Dangerous Odds, penned by Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center) and based on Marisa Lankester's memoir about "the creation of the first offshore gambling empire, which had ties to the mob."

Emma Watson is Belle in Disney's 'Beauty and the Beast'

It seems Emma Watson just can't stay away from Beauty and the Beast. Awhile back she was attached to lead a version of the fairy tale led by Guillermo Del Toro, but that project never got moving. Now she's back in the lead role once again, only this time it's for Disney and director Bill Condon.

Because, obviously, she's not going to be playing a furry beast (although that would be interesting in a way?), Watson will take on the role of Belle in Beauty and the Beast. Chalk it up as another fairy tale reimagining for Disney, who have already given us Maleficent and will have Cinderella in the coming months.

Condon last got behind the camera for the Wikileaks thriller, The Fifth Estate, and will begin production on Beauty and the Beast this year.

'X-men' Live-Action TV Series in the Works

It looks like Marvel's merry mutants in the X-men may be headed to the small screen! Last October a rumor surfaced that Fox was working on a live-action X-men TV series. They were reportedly in deep talks at the time although nothing was officially confirmed. Now THR is reporting that the series is indeed being developed at the network.

Evan Katz and Manny Coto, producers on Fox's 24, will be developing the series with Star Trek 3 writers JD Payne and Patrick McKay set to write the pilot episode. Talks are apparently ongoing and far from completion, and they'll have to get the blessing of Marvel before it can take place. Given the animosity between Disney/Marvel and 20th Century Fox over the X-men film rights this deal has to be considered tenuous until something is signed. Then again, the X-men are a moneymaking machine and a show could be a huge hit.

As for what the series will be about and the characters it would follow? That much is still a mystery, but one has to guess they'll try to tie it into the cinematic universe they've rebuilt since X-men: First Class.

David Oyelowo and Ava DuVernay Reteaming for Hurricane Katrina Film

While anger continues to build over the Oscar love Ava DuVernay and David Oyelowo didn't receive for Selma, the duo is pushing ahead on their third collaboration anyway. Variety reports the two will team up on a film set during the 2005 Hurricane Katrina disaster.

DuVernay will produce, write, and direct while Oyelowo will produce and lead the film, which is described as a love story and murder mystery. The two first worked together on the indie drama, Middle of Nowhere, which won her Best Director at Sundance back in 2012.

No word on when filming could begin but this is pretty exciting news that DuVernay and Oyelowo are back in business together and tackling another event with deep societal impact. The two have been traveling the globe promoting Selma and clearly have developed a personal and creative bond that hopefully will lead to more projects in the future. Go here to check out my recent interview with them both for Selma.

Luke Evans Drops Out of 'The Crow' Reboot

Well, the reboot of The Crow has suffered yet another setback. The long-developing, extremely troubled film was close to losing its star, Luke Evans, just last month and now it's official that he's dropped out of the role.

Corin Hardy is still attached to direct the film, an adaptation of James O'Barr's comic about the murdered Eric Draven who comes back to avenge the killing. Evans joins Mark Wahlberg and Bradley Cooper on the list of big name stars who have been attached only to leave the project for various reasons.

Filming is to begin later this year but at this rate who can really trust that to happen? [TheWrap]

Karl Urban Rumored for 'Aquaman' Villain Role; Noam Murro could Direct

Warner Bros. is already pushing ahead on their post-Batman v Superman roster of films, and the last couple of weeks have seen constant updates on the casting for Suicide Squad.  But they've also got solo movies coming up like 2018's Aquaman film starring Jason Momoa, and today a rumor has surfaced about who could be joining him on both sides of the camera.

Star Trek and Dredd star Karl Urban is reportedly being sought for a supporting role, possibly as the film's villain. Plot details are still under wraps so speculating on who he could play is premature, but if it's the villain the chances are it could be Black Manta or Ocean Master. A director still needs to be nailed down, and there's an update on that as well.

A couple of months ago you may recall that Jeff Nichols (Mud) was mentioned in leaked Sony emails as the movie's director, and Latino Review keeps his name in contention along with 300: Rise of an Empire's Noam Murro. Zack Snyder and Murro have worked together before and could be keen on doing so again.

So what do you think? Momoa vs. Urban? Aquaman will dive into theaters in 2018.

Chiwetel Ejiofor Eyes 'Doctor Strange' Role

Marvel already has one Oscar nominee headlining Doctor Strange, so why not add one more? According to THR, 12 Years a Slave's Chiwetel Ejiofor is being sought for a lead role in the film, joining star Benedict Cumberbatch.

Talks with Ejiofor are said to be pretty early on, and it's unclear what role he would take. Would he be a villain? Possibly someone like Dormammu? Or maybe Baron Mordo? It could be anybody, but landing an actor of Ejiofor's stature would be another huge feather in Marvel's cap. He's in Park City right now for the premiere of Z for Zachariah  and is bound to get asked about it, so stay tuned. If I see him I'll bumrush him with the question myself.

Directed by Scott Derrickson, Doctor Strange opens November 4th 2016.

'X-men: Apocalypse' Casts Its Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm

The mutants of X-men: Apocalypse are getting younger, and now we know who will be playing three of the most iconic members of Charles Xavier's team. A few weeks ago a shortlist emerged of contenders to play young versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm, and Bryan Singer hit Twitter to reveal who won out...

"Meet our new and brilliant young mutants: @AlexShipppp as#Storm @SophieT as #JeanGrey and @TyeSheridan as #Cyclops.
#XmenApocalypse"

Tye Sheridan is taking over the role of Scott Summers aka Cyclops, previously played by James Marsden; Alexandra Shipp replaces Halle Berry as Storm, and Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner is Jean Grey, who eventually becomes the all-powerful Phoenix. The film will center on the X-men: First Class era mutants and take place in the '80s, with the relationship between Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) the focus. Of course Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) will be involved, and it's expected that Channing Tatum will appear as Gambit.

X-men: Apocalypse opens May 27th 2016.

Melissa Benoist Cast as 'Supergirl' in the CBS Pilot

With Fox, the CW, NBC, and ABC already having filled their lineups with comic book shows, the only network that hadn't followed through was  CBS. But that changed when it was revealed a Supergirl series was in development at the network, and now we know who will play the Kryptonian.

According to Vulture, Glee and Whiplash actress Melissa Benoist will lead the Supergirl pilot in the role of Kara Zor-El. The series is spearheaded by Greg Berlanti, who has already found success with Arrow and The Flash. Kara Zor-El was born on Krypton but escaped before its ultimate destruction, and has been on Earth hiding her powers from the people around her. But at the age of 24 she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and become a hero.

The question is whether or not Supergirl will crossover with The Flash and Arrow. Even with Berlanti leading all three series the fact they are on different networks could be an issue.

Kate Mara Eyed for 'Star Wars' Spinoff; Kaya Scodelario in Talks for 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5'

With Tatiana Maslany, Rooney Mara, and Felicity Jones reportedly testing for the female lead in Gareth Edwards' standalone Star Wars film, a new name has been added to the list. Kate Mara, who will be seen as Sue Storm in the upcoming Fantastic For reboot, has also read for the role according to Variety. At this point details on the film are still few, although rumors persist it will center on bounty hunters. Why not bring all of these ladies on and make it an entire group of female bounty hunters? I'd pay to see that. The film is scheduled to open on December 16th 2016.

And it looks like Kaya Scodelario (Wuthering Heights, The Maze Runner) could join Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Deadline says early talks with her have begun for the female lead role, which she has been a contender for since late last year. She'd be joining Depp, Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites, and the possibility is still out there that Orlando Bloom could return. The film sets sail in July 2017.

Jake Gyllenhaal Passes On 'Suicide Squad' Role

As Warner Bros. looks to expand the scope of David Ayer's Suicide Squad film to possibly include an appearance by Batman himself, they still have to get the final cast in place. Tom Hardy recently dropped out of the film with reports suggesting he was unhappy with the size of his role as Rick Flag, and Jake Gyllenhaal was floated as a possibility to replace him. But the search will have to continue as Gyllenhaal has turned it down.

According to Variety, Gyllenhaal was offered the role but has decided against taking it, although no reasons are given for the decision. With Will Smith's Deadshot and Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn looking like the central characters it may be that Gyllenhaal had the same thoughts as Hardy. He's a big star who has been taking on increasingly complex roles over the past year, and it may be that he wants to continue with that than playing a supporting character in a comic book movie.

So the search continues. Suicide Squad opens August 5th 2016.

Nicolas Cage will Hunt Osama Bin Laden in Satirical 'Army of One'

Forget Zero Dark Thirty and the massive manhunt to capture Osama Bin Laden, the real story is that of average joe, Gary Faulkner. In 2010 he became famous for sneaking into Pakistan, armed with some simple weapons, in an effort to track down Bin Laden when the military couldn't. Faulkner got his 15 minutes of fame, and now it's getting extended as his story is being brought to the big screen in a film starring Nicolas Cage.

Cage is set to play Faulkner in the political satire, Army of One, which will be directed by Borat's Larry Charles. Scott Rothman and Rajiv Joseph (Draft Day) wrote the script based on a GQ article which shed light on Faulkner's strange story. He was a regular Colorado construction worker who became an overnight celebrity after his arrest in Pakistan and claims of trying to hunt Bin Laden.

With Charles at the helm one has to wonder if this will be a semi-improvised effort similar to Borat, and if so it could be amazing to see how Cage performs. [Deadline]

Simon Pegg Set to Co-Write 'Star Trek 3'

Simon Pegg's geek credentials are pretty much unquestioned as the creator of Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End, but can he take that and put it to use in a blockbuster franchise? He's about to get a chance as Deadline reports Pegg will co-write Star Trek 3, which has been floundering to get off the ground for awhile.

This will be an interesting move for Pegg, who obviously stars as Scotty in the Star Trek films as well. He'll be co-writing the script with Doug Jung, creator of the TNT series Dark Blue, and one has to wonder whether they'll make Scotty more of a central focus. They come aboard just a couple of weeks after Roberto Orci was dropped as director, and then his screenplay got tossed out, too.

Justin Lin is on board to direct the film now, and everyone will have to get moving to hit the July 2016 release date.

Bruce Willis to Star in Lame-Sounding Action Flick 'Extraction'

When was the last time Bruce Willis seemed motivated by one of his movies? Looper? The rest of the time it's been either an endless run of bad B-movie action flicks or A Good Day to Die Hard which might as well have been a B-movie. Let's face it, he's phoning it in at this point, and now he's signed on for another lame-sounding actioner.

Willis has agreed to star in Extraction, an action thriller directed by some guy named Steven C. Miller and is set to begin filming next month. Not that Willis will need a lot of prep time to play "a former CIA operative who hasn’t been the same since his wife was murdered. His son is a fresh young CIA operative following in his footsteps and with his father they are working on the development of a super-weapon called the Condor, when dad is kidnapped by a terrorist group. Learning that there is no plan for his father to be saved, Harry launches his own rescue operation. It leads to a conspiracy that will change his life forever."

Sounds like Willis barely has a role here, but is probably getting a full pay day out of it. Can't argue with that. [Deadline]

Gareth Edwards' 'Star Wars' Film Targets Rooney Mara, Tatiana Maslany, and Felicity Jones

So far we know even less about Gareth Edwards' Star Wars spinoff than we did throughout production on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It's been rumored to be a heist movie about bounty hunters and stolen Death Star plans, but right now nothing is for certain except that casting is now underway and three talented actresses are being sought for the female lead.

According to THR, Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's Rooney Mara are testing for the standalone film's female lead. Also on the Lucasfilm wishlist is The Theory of Everything's Oscar-nominated actress, Felicity Jones, although she may be too busy with The Da Vinci Code sequel Inferno to be a real contender. Who would any of these ladies be playing? Obviously that's still up in the air until we learn what the film is actually about. That could take awhile as a new writer is still being sought to replace Gary Whitta who stepped down some days ago. Apparently it won't be Simon Kinberg as previously rumored.

One thing we can take from this news is that Edwards' film is going to be led by a woman, and it looks like Lucasfilm is making an effort to have women play a key role in the Star Wars universe from here on out.

'Beginners' Director Mike Mills will Next Helm '20th Century Women'

Know who hasn't been seen in awhile? Mike Mills. His name may not be household just yet but chances are you know his last film, Beginners, a sensitive and funny film that has only grown in stature over the last five years. Hard to believe it has been that long, but Mills is finally moving on to his next project thanks to the fine folks at Annapurna Pictures.

Mills will direct 20th Century Women, which Annapurna Pictures will produce, continuing their practice of working with some of today's most challenging filmmakers. Here's the synopsis:

Set in the wonderfully disruptive days of punk's arrival to suburban America, Jimmy Carter's last summer in office and the oil and fiscal crises of the late 70's, the story is about three very different women teaching a boy what men are, what women are, about love and freedom and finding your own form of sanity in Santa Barbara 1979. When the boy's mother takes in a male border, his world view is further shaken by the man's desire to understand and be loved by these seemingly unknowable women.

Casting is underway now with the plan to begin filming later this year.

'Kick-Ass' Writer Jane Goldman to Pen 'Fables' for Big Screen

After years of development as both a feature film and possible TV series, it was confirmed in 2013 that Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) would bring Vertigo Comics' Fables to the big screen. Not much has been heard about the fairy tale project since, leading some to believe the book had been closed on it once again. But it turns out Fables is very much alive, and writer with considerable comic book experience has just come aboard.

According to producer David Heyman, Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class writer Jane Goldman has been brought in to script the next draft...

Heyman: “[Arcel] did a draft, and now he’s supervising Jane, who’s doing a draft. Hoping that it’ll come in and we’ll be able to move to the next stage. All these things always take longer than you want. And ‘Fables’ is not easy, by any means, but I think it’ll be pretty great.”

Fables was created by Bill Willingham and centers on a large group of familiar fairy tale characters who are very much real and living in our world.  After being evicted from their lands they now live in a place called Fabletown set in a hidden part of New York City. If it sounds a lot like Once Upon a Time, well now you know why the TV series never got off the ground.

No updates on a start date or anything like that, but perhaps a date will be announced along with another major Vertigo adaptation in Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Sandman. [CBR]

Michael Moore has Mixed Thoughts on 'American Sniper'; Seth Rogen Slams Film as Propaganda

So what did you think of American Sniper? After the film made $90M over the weekend and gained a number of Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor for star Bradley Cooper, it stands to reason the film has a lot of supporters. While some may take issue with the questionable portrayal of Chris Kyle (I most certainly have problems with it), some have a more specific problem. Famed documentarian Michael Moore hit Twitter to say that he was taught all snipers were cowards...

It's important to note that Moore wasn't commenting on the film itself, but by the depiction of Kyle as a war hero. Questions about some of Kyle's claims (many have been proven to be bogus) and the movie's seemingly pro-military stance have dogged the release, but obviously didn't deter audiences. But for all of Moore's comments, his feelings on the movie are considerably more positive. He hit Facebook to elaborate on his thoughts...

Moore: "Awesome performance from Bradley Cooper. One of the best of the year. Great editing. Costumes, hair, makeup superb!"

But he wasn't without criticism, taking time to single out Clint Eastwood's confusing direction, although I think the blame really lies with screenwriter Jason Dean Hall...

Moore:  "Oh... and too bad Clint gets Vietnam and Iraq confused in his storytelling. And that he has his characters calling Iraqis "savages" throughout the film."

Meanwhile, Seth Rogen took time out from his own controversies to take a swipe at American Sniper, tweeting that it reminded him of the pro-Nazi propaganda movie during Inglourious Basterds. Ouch.

Given the number of heated emails I've received it's clear people have a lot to say about American Sniper. Do you feel it's accurate? Pro or anti-war propaganda? Let us know what you think.

Matilda Lutz Grabs 'Rings'; Juliette Binoche is 'Polina'; Hugh Jackman Joins "Eddie the Eagle" Biopic

The third chapter in The Ring franchise was confirmed last year when F. Javier Gutierrez came aboard as director, and now finally the film has a star and title. Italian actress Matilda Lutz will lead Rings, which will continue the horror centered on a mysterious video tape that causes those who watch it to die a week later. Other than the return of the demonic child Samara, the film will feature all new characters. This will be the biggest role of Lutz's career after starring in a couple of little-seen features. [TheWrap]

The always-great Juliette Binoche has landed the starring role in Polina, the directorial debut of choreographer Angelin Preljocaj. Based on the French graphic novel, the film is set in "Moscow in the early 90’s and follows the journey of Polina, a gifted ballerina from a modest background who joins the prestigious school of Professor Bojinsky and becomes a Bolshoi dancer at 18. Pic turns on Polina’s love story with a French dancer who initiates her to contemporary dance and leads her to travel to different parts of the world." Preljocaj will co-write and direct alongside Valerie Muller. [Variety]

First rumored more than a week ago, The Wrap is now confirming that Hugh Jackman and Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) will lead a biopic on British Olympic skier Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards. Egerton's 'Kingsman' director Matthew Vaughn will produce while his pal Dexter Fletcher (Wild Bill) will direct. Egerton would play Edwards, who in 1988 became the first to ever represent Great Britain in Olympics for ski jumping. He became something of a national hero for his perseverance and underdog spirit, although he finished last in the events he competed in. Jackman would take on the role of Edwards' mentor, Chuck Berghorn, while Timothy Spall is being sought to play Edwards' father.

'Boyhood' Named Film of the Year by London Film Critics Circle

Whether here or abroad, Richard Linklater's Boyhood appears to be building an incredible, possibly unstoppable, amount of momentum heading into the Academy Awards. Coming off Best Picture wins at the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice, Boyhood has now been named Film of the Year by the London Film Critics Circle. That goes along with a Director of the Year win for Linklater, and Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette. In general everything went according to the established playbook. Michael Keaton still took the top acting prize for his Birdman performance, while Julianne Moore won Best Actress for Still Alice. JK Simmons racked up another Best Supporting Actor victory for throwing drumsticks around in Whiplash, and Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel won for its screenplay.

Looking at the British side it was Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin which won for Best British Film, while Rosamund Pike saw some love for her performance in Gone Girl. Full list of winners is below:
