'X-men: Apocalypse' Casts Its Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm

The mutants of X-men: Apocalypse are getting younger, and now we know who will be playing three of the most iconic members of Charles Xavier's team. A few weeks ago a shortlist emerged of contenders to play young versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm, and Bryan Singer hit Twitter to reveal who won out...

"Meet our new and brilliant young mutants: @AlexShipppp as#Storm @SophieT as #JeanGrey and @TyeSheridan as #Cyclops.
#XmenApocalypse"

Tye Sheridan is taking over the role of Scott Summers aka Cyclops, previously played by James Marsden; Alexandra Shipp replaces Halle Berry as Storm, and Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner is Jean Grey, who eventually becomes the all-powerful Phoenix. The film will center on the X-men: First Class era mutants and take place in the '80s, with the relationship between Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) the focus. Of course Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) will be involved, and it's expected that Channing Tatum will appear as Gambit.

X-men: Apocalypse opens May 27th 2016.

Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen won't Return for 'X-men: Apocalypse'

The cast of X-men: Days of Future Past was so huge it basically included mutants from three different eras: the past, present, and future. The logistics of it for director Bryan Singer must have given him plenty of sleepless nights, but fortunately he won't have to deal with it for 2016's X-men: Apocalypse. What we know is that it will be set in the '80s and focus on the younger team of X-men. So it always seemed unlikely that older characters would be making an appearance, and Patrick Stewart just confirmed they won't be.

While speaking with Larry King , Stewart revealed that he and Ian McKellen won't be reprising their roles as older Charles Xavier and Magneto in X-men: Apocalypse.

Stewart: “I was learning quite a lot more about it last night, and it is going to be looking very much at the earlier lives of all our characters. And so I don’t think we’ll be making an appearance."

Not much of a shock, really, and probably won't hurt the film much as it leaves more room to explore the relationship between Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Charles Xavier (James McAvoy). Plus it's not like there will be any shortage of characters as Channing Tatum is expected to appear as Gambit, plus young versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm will debut in some way.

Tye Sheridan, Saoirse Ronan, and Taron Egerton Eyed for 'X-Men: Apocalypse'

Get ready X-men fans because there's going to be plenty of Marvel's merry mutants on the big screen over the next couple of years. The centerpiece of the rapid franchise expansion, which includes Gambit and Deadpool solo movies, is of course 2016's X-men: Apocalypse. With the continuity basically getting a jumpstart and younger versions of established characters being introduced, some pretty big names are in the mix for three of the core X-men.

A couple of months ago a rumor surfaced that Hailee Steinfeld, Chloe Moretz, and Elle Fanning were in the mix for the role of young Jean Grey, but now Latino Review has rounded up a new list of contenders. Saoirse Ronan and Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner are said to actually be testing for it, and you don't go looking for stars of their caliber unless the roles are going to be big for a long time.  As for Jean's eventual lover Scott "Cyclops" Summers, it's Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Jamie Blackley (If I Stay), and Tye Sheridan (The Tree of Life) in the mix with Sheridan the frontrunner according to The Wrap's Jeff Sneider.

And who is looking to replace Halle Berry as the weather goddess, Storm? Lesser known names like Alexandra Shipp and Zendaya Coleman are apparently being considered. Shipp recently took some heat for her performance as R&B star Aaliyah in the Lifetime Channel biopic, while Coleman is a Disney Channel starlet best known for the teen comedy, Shake It Up.

As much as I'm a fan of Ronan, it's Turner who seems like a better fit for Jean Grey. Remember, Ronan was also rumored for Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age of Ultron and that never worked out. Sheridan is the most established actor of the male group and would be a safe pick for Cyclops, but Edgerton might could be the more exciting choice especially if Kingsman performs well. With Bryan Singer hoping to get production going in April we should learn something soon. X-men: Apocalypse opens May 27th 2016.

Oscar Isaac is En Sabah Nur in 'X-men: Apocalypse'

Over the last few days there have been a flurry of rumors, kicked off by the terrible Meet the Movie Press podcast that seemed to suggest Idris Elba was up for the bad guy role in X-men: Apocalypse.  It was a silly rumor that suggested the actor was a contender because he said the word "apocalypse" once in Pacific Rim. Yeah, see how flimsy these things get sometimes? Anyway, it turns out it won't be Elba, nor the previously rumored Tom Hardy, but instead Oscar Isaac who will take on the role of the X-men's most powerful foe.

It's another major coup for Isaac, who already has a part to play in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and will be seen later this year in the potential Oscar contender, A Most Violent Year. He will play Apocalypse aka En Sabah Nur, the Egyptian mutant considered to be the first of his species. The character was glimpsed at the end of X-men: Days of Future Past commanding a legion of followers. What we know about the film is that it will be set in the '80s and will continue to follow the 'First Class' team of heroes, with younger versions of familiar faces like Jean Grey and Cyclops making appearances. It's also expected that Channing Tatum will turn up as Gambit.

Directed by Bryan Singer, X-men: Apocalypse opens May 27th 2016.

Rumored Shortlist for Jean Grey and Cyclops in 'X-men: Apocalypse'

Now that the X-men franchise's complicated timeline has been repaired thanks to X-men: Days of Future Past, Bryan Singer and Co. are looking to recast some of the roles you're familiar with. We've known all along that we could see younger versions of Cyclops and Jean Grey in 2016's X-men: Apocalypse, which is to be set in the 1980s, and now we're learning who 20th Century Fox has in mind to play them.

The Wrap says Hailee Steinfeld, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Elle Fanning are at the top of the list for Jean Grey, the red-headed telepath/telekinetic who eventually becomes the all-powerful Phoenix. As for Cyclops, the list includes unknowns Ben Hardy, Charlie Rowe (Red Band Society) and Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar). What we don't know is how much of a role the mutant couple will have, although it's expected they'll be sticking around for future films and that will play into the casting process. In other words, Fox is looking for talents who can grow into the roles and become bigger stars. Unfortunately, that means James Marsden and Famke Janssen will have to find something else to do.

X-men: Apocalypse opens May 27th 2016.

'X-men: Apocalypse' to Highlight Mystique/Magneto Relationship

The X-men comics have always been one big mutant soap opera, and that's been reflected in the movies as well. The first trilogy centered on the love triangle between Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Wolverine, and the romantic entanglements haven't gone away as the focus shifted to the young core of students. X-men: First Class and X-men: Days of Future Past had the relationship between Xavier (James McAvoy), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) at their core, and now we're seeing it from another angle in 2016's X-men: Apocalypse.

In an extensive piece of Lawrence's career, THR notes that X-men: Apocalypse will highlight the romance between Mystique and Magneto. Sorry, all of you hoping Mystique and Hank "Beast" McCoy (Nicholas Hoult) would finally hook up, butt hat doesn't seem to be happening. Then again, screenwriter Simon Kinberg has previously stated how he finds the Mystique/Beast friendship potentially interesting, with a hope of exploring it more in 'Apocalypse'.

The point of this seems to be that Mystique is going to get her moment to shine. The first film was largely about Magneto, the second was about Xavier, so it make sense she would be at the center of the next. Plus, Lawrence and Fassbender are much bigger stars now than they were a few years ago.

Bryan Singer will return to direct X-men: Apocalypse for May 27th 2016.

Quicksilver Re-Confirmed for 'X-men: Apocalypse'; Teased for a Solo Film

Bryan Singer's X-men: Days of Future Past was pretty grim, which may be why Evan Peters' dash (literally) of fun and humor as Quicksilver stood out so much. Everybody loved the character and wished he had a bigger role throughout, but fortunately we haven't seen the last of the speedster mutant. Although screenwriter Simon Kinberg confirmed Quicksilver would be back for 2016's X-men: Apocalypse, second unit director Brian Smrz tells Newsarama he'll begin work on his scene soon...

"They want me to start pretty soon, on the storyboarding and stuff. I’ll be working on the next X-Men for the next month or so part-time, and by the end of the year it’ll be full-time... There will be another Quicksilver scene, which I'm looking forward to. That'll be fun."

Smrz had a lot to do with Quicksilver's awesome slow-motion kitchen scene, and he would love an opportunity to do more, possibly in a solo film...

"We talked about Quicksilver before. I'd love to do a Quicksilver as a solo film because there's a lot to enjoy with that character."

What do you think? Is a Quicksilver solo film a good idea? Or is he better off in small doses? X-men: Apocalypse opens May 27th 2016.

Tom Hardy Could be En Sabah Nur in 'X-men: Apocalypse'

With his physical and commanding screen presence, it's no wonder Tom Hardy has been a frequent target for superhero films, usually on the side of the guys causing all the trouble. He's already broken Batman's back as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, and Warner Bros. is seeking to bring him back for Suicide Squad. But now 20th Century Fox has entered the picture and wants Hardy to play the big, bad, and blue En Sabah Nur in 2016's X-men: Apocalypse.

The Wrap reports Hardy is in contention for the title role in X-men: Apocalypse, playing the bad guy glimpsed at the tail end of X-men: Days of Future Past. Apocalypse, aka En Sabah Nur, was born in Egypt some 3,000 years ago and is considered the very first mutant. He lives by the credo of "survival of the fittest", and is a conqueror gifted with incredible powers, advanced technology, and followers who worship him like a god. It's doubtful Hardy could take on the role and do something like Suicide Squad or Marvel's Doctor Strange, another comic book film he's up for. So he's going to have to choose, and personally I'd like to see what he could do battling Charles Xavier's band of merry mutants.

X-men: Apocalypse opens May 27th 2016 directed by Bryan Singer.

'X-men: Apocalypse' to End the Trilogy; Writer Teases Cable, Scarlet Witch Appearances

Did X-men: Days of Future Past leave you scratching your head about what the heck just happened? There were something like a dozen mutants running around, three timelines getting mucked with, and at the end of it everybody we thought long gone were suddenly back and acting like nothing ever happened. As we already know, the film basically reworked the X-men timeline to fix some glaring errors, leaving the door open to the return of some old favorites. It also cleared the decks for 2016's X-men: Apocalypse, which may feature younger versions of some familiar characters.  But there's a lot more going on with the upcoming X-men film that writer Simon Kinberg was willing to reveal.

Kinberg's Yahoo! Q&A with fans turned out to be quite the treasure trove of info about X-men: Apocalypse, which the writer has said will focus on the 'First Class' group of mutants. It's also intended to be the final part of a trilogy, wrapping up the storylines of young Charles Xavier, Magneto, and Mystique...

Kinberg: “The thrust of ‘Apocalypse’ is really to complete the trilogy we began with ‘First Class’ - to complete the stories of young Raven, young Hank, younger Charles and Erik. And complete this trilogy of four people who began the films sort of disparate and in different worlds…[and who] we’ve followed through the span of decades. So that’ll be the thrust. There will be familiar characters and new characters that we haven’t seen…ever…but it’ll be the completion of what we began in ‘First Class’.”

One of the familiar characters that is expected to return is actually pretty new to the franchise, and that's Evan Peters' Quicksilver. As most fans of the comic know, Quicksilver is the son of Magneto and brother to the Scarlet Witch, and both relationships were teased in the film. Kinberg says we may see that play out in X-men: Apocalypse, although he was somewhat non-committal. When asked about Magneto and Quicksilver, Kinberg said...

Kinberg:  “It is a fascinating relationship. Erik grew up without a family, it’s such a huge part of him, of his mission. So the idea of exploring what it means for Magneto to be a father and reconnect with a son many years after his birth, is fascinating and certainly something that would be interesting to explore in future films.

And as for Scarlet Witch?

Kinberg:  “When we made ‘DOFP’ there is a reference to her in the scene when they’re at Quicksilver’s house, but we ended up pulling it out because like a lot of things it had to be sacrificed for the main momentum of the film. It’s a character we all love, because everyone loves Quicksilver so much. The more we can do to explore his family, the better. So maybe.

He went on to add that a couple of other fan-favorite characters could be appearing. One is the British telepathic ninja (don't ask!) Psylocke, who actually had a blink-and-you'll-miss-her cameo in 'The Last Stand'. The other is Cable, the time-traveling warrior son of Cyclops and the clone of Jean Grey...again, just don't ask. About Psylocke...

Kinberg: “She’s a fan favourite, and also a favourite of mine. We have a small part that she plays in ‘Last Stand’, and we talked about including her in ‘DOFP’ quite seriously actually. There was a version of the script she was in and we even auditioned some actors in Montreal. But we didn’t feel there was enough of a part she would play in a movie that was already full of many, many mutants....“She has a cool power. I know Bryan thinks she’s a neat character so there’s certainly a chance she’ll be in an ‘X-Men’ movie some day. Hopefully there’ll be a lot of ‘X-Men’ movies and there’s lot of mutants we’re yet to fully explore onscreen, even if they’ve had cameos before. Now we’re making more films there’s a chance to dig deeper.”

If Psylocke sounds convoluted, she's got nothing on Cable. Would Kinberg be open to bringing him into X-men: Apocalypse, which already sounds complicated enough?

Kinberg:  “We also talked about including him in ‘DOFP’. I will say, we love the character, we’d love to find a place for him in these movies, but I cannot confirm or deny which characters will actually be in ‘Apocalypse’ until I read some spoiler about it online and then I have to say yes or no."

The X-men: Days of Future Past Blu-Ray will be available on October 14th, and if you're thinking of having an X-men marathon Kinberg has been nice enough to reveal the order in which you should watch them...

- ‘X-Men: First Class’
- The past part of ‘DOFP’
- ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’
- ‘X-Men’
- ‘X2’- ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’- ‘The Wolverine’- The future part of ‘Days of Future Past’

X-men: Apocalypse opens May 27th 2016.

Young Cyclops, Storm, and Jean Grey to Appear in 'X-men: Apocalypse'; Bryan Singer will Direct

Bryan Singer, Simon Kinberg and the gang at 20th Century Fox had a clear mission statement when it came to X-men: Days of Future Past, and that was to help us all forget how screwed up the franchise was just a few years ago. While X-men: First Class was a pretty good step towards wiping away the stain of X-men Origins: Wolverine and X-men: The Last Stand, 'DOFP' went the next step and basically retconned a lot of that stuff away, leaving the door open to some very familiar characters returning for 2016's X-men: Apocalypse, which Bryan Singer has now been confirmed to direct.

Deadline reports the news, while also adding that the storyline centered on the arrival of the all-powerful mutant En Sabah Nur aka Apocalypse will also see young Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm making appearances. But as Kinberg stated in his recent Yahoo! Q&A, the film will mostly be about the 'First Class' team...

Kinberg: "The X-Men film that we're working on now as everybody knows is X-Men: Apocalypse and that really follows the stories of the let's say 'First Class' X-Men. Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, many others of that generation of X-Men. So, in future X-Men films? Perhaps, but in 'Apocalypse' it will really be the continuation of the 'past' of 'Days of Future Past.'"

So it sounds like it's possible James Marsden, Famke Janssen, and Halle Berry aren't totally out of the picture if there's a modern day X-men film. X-men: Apocalypse will bring back James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and much of the 'First Class' squad, while rumors persist that Channing Tatum could cameo as Remy Lebeau aka Gambit, leading to a potential solo movie.

Let the casting begin. Could I suggest Jane Levy for a young Jean Grey? X-men: Apocalypse opens May 27th 2016.

Bryan Singer Shows Off 'X-men: Apocalypse' Script

There's still some question whether Bryan Singer will actually direct X-men: Apocalypse, but at least to his mind he's rarin' to go. With a little less than two years until it opens Singer has teased this script page from the treatment he co-wrote, and it turns out to be from the opening scene. Although we can't see much it's clear the action is set around the Nile in Egypt and features a fight involving Apocalypse and his Four Horsemen, all of whom were glimpsed at the end of X-men: Days of Future Past.

So there you go! A script page! Yeah, that's what passes for stories nowadays and I'm contributing to it, only because it's the X-men and they are awesome.  X-men: Apocalypse opens May 27th 2016.

Kelsey Grammer Hopes to Play Beast Again in Future 'X-men' Film

Kelsey Grammer: Franchise Superstar? That's what it has been like lately, or it will be in the coming weeks when the former Cheers and Frasier star is seen in both Transformers: Age of Extinction and The Expendables 3. And that's on top of a very brief cameo he made only weeks ago in X-men: Days of Future Past, reprising his X-men: The Last Stand role as the older version of Hank "Beast" McCoy. And as it turns out, Grammer was so gung-ho to play the mutant genius again that he reached out to Bryan Singer in requesting the cameo. He tells Collider....

Grammer: “Actually I called Bryan. I bumped into Hugh Jackman and he said, ‘Oh you’re gonna be in another X-Men, mate!’ and I said, ‘No I’m not, I don’t know anything about it.’ So I made a couple of inquiries, got a hold of the script, found out that it’s primarily dealing with the past and that timeline I don’t have a place in, but I saw that at the end there was this coda where he made an appearance. I said, ‘Listen, I really want to be involved,’ so Bryan arranged for it and I had a lovely time.”

While we know X-men: Apocalypse will be set in 1983 and largely focus on the younger band of mutants, the door has clearly been opened for more movies with the present-day team. And if that turns out to be the case Grammer wants to be part of it...

Grammer: “I hope to do another. I hope they find some way to come up with a new story that involves Beast in my timeline.”

X-men: Apocalypse opens May 27th 2016.

Fan Art Shows Channing Tatum as Gambit; 'X-men: Apocalypse' Setting Revealed

Over the weekend X-men: Days of Future Past shot past The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as the top-grossing film of the summer, good news for 20th Century Fox as they set the stage for 2016's X-men: Apocalypse. Of course, there was also a rumor Bryan Singer could be out as director due to his legal troubles, so you can't win 'em all. Another story that has sparked mixed emotions in X-men fans everywhere has to do with Channing Tatum taking on the role of the ragin' cajun, Gambit, as he and producer Lauren Schuler Donner have been talking about for months.

Some fans may hate the idea of Tatum as their favorite thieving X-man, but a good idea would be to start preparing for it to happen. Devian Art's Metalblackfae has designed a cool piece of fan art that shows how Tatum could look as Gambit. I have doubts they'll go with this classic version of the character with the weird headgear and body armor, but there's no doubt Tatum is a dead-ringer for the character.

Whether or not Gambit makes his next appearance in X-men: Apocalypse as many expect, we now have a better idea when the film will take place. The two prior films have been set during tumultuous dates in our history: X-men: First Class in 1962 and X-men: Days of Future Past in 1973, and Bryan Singer has promised X-men: Apocalypse would be in the '80s. Now chatty producer/writer Simon Kinberg has revealed the film will take place in 1983. There are some spoilers beyond this point so just be warned!

Setting the film in 1983 means it will be two decades after X-men: First Class, and that should have a dramatic impact on most of the characters. We could see James McAvoy's Charles Xavier beginning to resemble Patrick Stewart's older version a bit more. The same should happen for Michael Fassbender as Magneto, but also the villain's hardline ideology should be further cemented. It will also be interesting to see how the retconning, or rebooting of the continuity will be handled. Will we start seeing younger versions of established characters like Cyclops, Storm, or Gambit and Nightcrawler as has previously been rumored? And will there be another significant historical event the film will center itself around?

Lots to ponder. X-men: Apocalypse opens May 27th 2016. [CBM]

Bryan Singer Could Get Pulled from Directing 'X-men: Apocalypse'

When allegations of sex abuse were made against Bryan Singer recently, it came at a time when he was heavily promoting X-men: Days of Future Past. And we saw that 20th Century Fox's reaction was to pull him from the press tour for awhile, and it didn't have a negative impact on the movie's box office, or at least it doesn't seem to have had any. But with Singer already keyed in to direct X-men: Apocalypse in 2016, this may not be the last time his legal situation becomes an issue.

According to Radar Online, execs within Fox are concerned production on X-men: Apocalypse could be impacted if Singer is busy defending himself in court. And that is a very real, legitimate concern because the studio has big money to think about here, which is why the subject of moving Singer into a producer role and bringing in another director is being considered. Discussions on that topic apparently have not gone well, leading to "heated arguments and walk outs". What isn't clear is if Singer is fighting to save his job or if he's fighting over who would replace him. It would be difficult to believe Singer hasn't at least thought about this scenario and that Fox might need some type of contingency plan.

Singer's deal was made some time ago so no matter what happens he's guaranteed to make a ton of money on X-men: Apocalypse. That's probably the least of his concerns right now, though, while the studio is all about protecting their assets. The site's source notes...

"They don't really care whether he's innocent or guilty- they're only concerned with the bottom line, which is giving him another $250 to $350 million to make Apocalypse."

Channing Tatum Says 'Gambit' May be a Standalone Film First

The more Channing Tatum and producer Lauren Schuler Donner talk about a Gambit movie, the more apparent it is that Tatum will play the thieving X-man. Bryan Singer has talked about introducing the character in 2016's X-men: Apocalypse, setting him in the 1980s with the rest of the X-men: First Class team of younger mutants. But in a conversation with MTV, Tatum suggests that may no longer be the case, not if he has his way....

Tatum: “We’ve talked about it being a standalone, first, and actually trying to change the ‘hero, superhero movie.’ Because Gambit is not your typical hero. He’s a thief. He walks on the gray. I’m hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones.”

And there's also a glimmer of hope for those who have been vocal about not wanting Tatum to play the ragin' Cajun as he says nothing has been confirmed yet. Still, this looks like it will happen one way or another because Tatum is clearly taking an active role in developing the film...

Tatum: “Creatively, we’re starting to chug forward. Obviously there’s nothing [official]. There are only conversations and dreams right now, really.”

Explaining the Villain At the End of 'X-men: Days of Future Past'

Maybe it was the X-men t-shirts and the bag with a bunch of Marvel superheroes on it, but both times I've gone to see X-men: Days of Future Past people have felt I was the guy to pitch a bunch of questions to. And I'm cool with that because comics, in particular X-men comics, are kinda my thing. And sure enough the majority of questions had to do with the film's post-credit sequence which I will get into after this bit of spoiler space...

Okay, so at the end of X-men: Days of Future Past we are taken to a scene in ancient Egypt where a throng of people are chanting "En Sabah Nur!!" to a robed man atop a sand dune using his mutant power to build the Pyramids. The camera rotates around to show his face, revealing he's a teenager with blue lips and greyish skin. This is the immortal Apocalypse, a character born some 5000 years ago in Akkaba, and generally regarded as the first mutant. That distinction went to others for awhile (including Namor) but it has stuck with Apocalypse.

Because of how he was raised, Apocalypse subscribes to the Darwinist theory "survival of the fittest", and has spent his many thousands of years testing himself and others. Due to the involvement of the villain Rama-Tut and acquired Alien technology, Apocalypse has grown in strength and ability over time. He has the power to alter reality and matter, making him capable of literally anything. To maintain his power, he goes into hibernation for lengthy periods of time, leaving his followers in the Clan Akkaba and his personal envoy Ozymandias to handle matters.

That's all well and good, but how is he associated with the X-men? His first appearance comes in the pages of X-factor where he faced the original team of Cyclops, a newly reborn Jean Grey, Iceman, Beast, and Angel. Apocalypse's motives were modest, initially, but then we see that his past, present, and future are uniquely tied to the Summers (Cyclops) bloodline. Apocalypse infected Cyclops' son, Nathan, forcing the child to be sent off into the future when he could be cured. When Nathan returns as the grown-up and militaristic Cable, it's his arrival that awakens Apocalypse once again.  Apocalypse becomes obsessed not only with the Summers clan, but with the survival of all mutantkind, in a way making him not too far removed from Magneto ideologically. His aspirations are far greater and self-serving, however.

Apocalypse is the centerpiece of one of the most critical X-men storylines, the Age of Apocalypse. In a story that is very similar to X-men: Days of Future Past, Charles Xavier's son goes back in time to kill Magneto but only succeeds in murdering his own father. With Xavier dead, a new timeline is created in which Apocalypse rules with an iron fist, humans are marginalized or killed outright, and a new team of X-men must be formed to stop him. There have been suggestions that Bryan Singer plans to incorporate elements of this into 2016's X-men: Apocalypse, but all he's seen fit to reveal is a desire to explore the idea of "ancient mutants", which obviously includes Apocalypse.

But what may be the best indicator of what's in store for the film may have to do with the mutants Apocalypse surrounds himself with. He's usually accompanied by his lieutenants the Four Horsemen, named after the Biblical plagues War, Pestilence, Famine, and Death. At first these Horsemen were non-descript mutants given a significant power boost, but lately Apocalypse has been going after more prominent figures. He transformed Angel into the psychotic metal-winged Archangel. Other X-men who have served as Horsemen include Wolverine, Sunfire, and Gambit, and for a spell even the Hulk was counted amongst their number. Screenwriter Simon Kinberg suggested Apocalypse will be trying much the same thing again...

Kinberg: "The thing that we've spent the most time talking about is not just the visual execution of the character, which is its own challenge. [But] creating a character that's the most powerful I think of any mutant villain that we've seen in the 'X-Men' movies so far. More powerful than Magneto...But we've also been talking about how to give him a real emotional and philosophical underpinning. So he's not just somebody who's out there destroying the world because he can. What he's doing is – in his mind – justified and validated by a real compelling, coherent philosophy. He tries to convert people – maybe some of our most familiar characters – to come to his cause."

So does this mean we'll see a return of Ben Foster as Angel? And what about Gambit, who will presumably be played by Channing Tatum? Gambit is a maybe, but X-men: Apocalypse is set in the 1980s and so it would require a younger actor than Foster to play Angel. It's worth noting that in the 'Days of Future Past' virals it's revealed Angel was killed in anti-Trask protests in 2011. He could still return thanks to the new timeline the films have established. Chances are Singer and Kinberg will be making significant changes to Apocalypse's history for the film, but as we saw in the post-credits sequence his origin will remain largely intact. This is just a small glimpse into who Apocalypse is (he even fought a young Dracula back in the day!) and the incalculable threat he poses to the X-men, and I'm very curious to see how he's depicted on screen. I'm also hoping Singer has room to include Apocalypse's other henchmen, the Dark Riders, who were my favorite heel team for awhile.

X-men: Apocalypse opens May 27th 2016 and will be shot back-to-back with the third Wolverine film.

'X-men: Apocalypse' to Include Some of the Original Cast

Any concerns 20th Century Fox may have had about moving forward on X-men: Apocalypse have been wiped away by X-men: Days of Future Past's huge opening weekend. What we've heard previously is that it will be a direct sequel and will focus on the younger characters, but that may not be entirely the case and we may again see time travel factoring into the story.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, screenwriter Simon Kinberg revealed that the older cast will factor into the story as well...

Kinberg: "It will focus primarily on the 'First Class' cast, but it will certainly have some of the original cast involved, too."

Patrick Stewart hinted some time ago that there were plans for Charles Xavier post 'Days of Future Past', and this may be what he's talking about. Apocalypse is an immortal mutant who has lived for thousands of years, and continues to be a thorn in the X-men's side far into the future, so it wouldn't be surprising if he's menacing both teams. It seems a little bit early for Bryan Singer, who Kinberg says is still expected to direct, to try and adapt the classic Age of Apocalypse storyline. The groundwork for something of that scope could be set in this next film, though.

X-men: Apocalypse is due to open on May 27th 2016.

'X-men: Apocalypse' To Be Roland Emmerich-Style Disaster Film

Having just walked out of X-men: Days of Future Past for a second time, there's a pretty decent amount of destruction in it. At least towards the end, anyway. Nothing on the level of what Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) throws out in his films on a regular basis, but apparently that will be coming with 2016's X-men: Apocalypse, at least according to writer Simon Kinberg.

While talking with IGN, Kinberg revealed his approach to tackling a character like Apocalypse, arguably the X-men's most dangerous foe. Recognized as the very first mutant (for a time that honor went to Namor), Apocalypse aka En Sabah Nur was born in Egypt thousands of years ago and lives by the theory "survival of the fittest". Kinberg says his plan is to try and make Apocalypse a genuine character rather than just a harbinger of doom...

And in terms of how they hope to show that power, Kinberg says the films of Roland Emmerich are the model....

Kinberg: "The kind of scope and scale we’re talking about is like disaster movie, extinction level event. Sort of Roland Emmerich-style moviemaking, which you’ve never seen in an X-Men movie, or any superhero movie, which I think is exciting."

Apocalypse very rarely travels alone, as usually accompanied by his lieutenants the Four Horsemen: Death, Famine, War, Pestilence. In the comics, Apocalypse has converted numerous X-men into Horsemen, including Wolverine, Angel, and Sunfire. At one point even the Hulk was a Horseman. So are we to infer from Kinberg's statement that Apocalypse will try the same thing in the movie? Seems likely.

Watch Honest Trailer for the 'X-men' Trilogy; Quicksilver Confirmed for 'X-men: Apocalypse'

To fans of the X-men just saying the name "Brett Ratner" will make them want to pop a claw in somebody's gut, preferably his. The crappy director dropped his pants all over the franchise with X-men: The Last Stand, ruining the good work done by Bryan Singer and sending the entire series into a tailspin it didn't recover from until X-men: First Class. With Singer returning for X-men: Days of Future Past, those clever Screen Junkies have delivered another one of their 'Honest Trailers' recapping the earlier movies. Not only do they give Ratner the grief he deserves, but they also poke fun at Hugh Jackman's 'roided up physique, Rogue's misfortune, Gambit (sorta), and the entire idea of mutants being hated in the first place.

And with Ratner's film back in the spotlight where he probably hoped it would never be again, screenwriter Simon Kinberg has opened up about it and how it relates to X-men: Days of Future Past. If there are still angry fans out there pissed over what happened to their favorite character, nobody seems to have more regrets over it than Kinberg. He tells ScreenCrush....

Kinberg: "I regret that The Dark Phoenix story wasn’t the primary story of the movie. I wanted The Dark Phoenix story, but I regret where the movie ended up. And so, weirdly, ['DOFP'] was sort of my opportunity, a little like the characters in ‘Days of Future Past’ going back and improving their younger selves with the lessons they’ve learned as wiser men. It’s sort of a chance for me to go back and do differently what I did ten years ago on ‘X3.’ "

One of the improvements Kinberg made in' DOFP' is giving the new characters a bigger, more memorable introduction. Not only do we get a few incredible action sequences with Bishop, Blink Warpath, and Sunspot, but the buzz surrounding Evan Peters' Quicksilver has been incredible. And for good reason as the character is a total jolt of energy to the film, which is why Kinberg confirmed to Total Film that Quicksilver will "absolutely" return for 2016's X-men: Apocalypse. He also talks briefly about a scuttled plan to bring in Quicksilver's sister, The Scarlet Witch....

Kinberg: “We talked about bringing Scarlet Witch into the mix for ['X-Men: Days of Future Past']".  Actually, there was a little scene that we shot that we ended up cutting out of the movie that alluded to her. But it was sort of an interstitial scene that didn’t push the movie forward, so it ended up being cut…But [Quicksilver] would absolutely be back for the next X-Men movie.”

X-men: Days of Future Past opens May 23rd, and keep an eye out for our review tomorrow.

Channing Tatum Will Play Gambit in Future 'X-men' Films

Ever since X-men franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner hinted she wanted Channing Tatum to play the ragin' Cajun, Gambit, in a future film there has been quite the uproar from fans against the move. That only increased when Tatum began openly campaigning for the role as the popular mutant, finally stating that he had indeed met for it. Now Donner has confirmed to Total Film that Tatum will be playing Gambit....

Donner: " It is Channing, yes. Well you know he's a rogue, Channing. He's a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau, and he can handle the action, we all know that. He's got a really good heart, because I know him personally, I did a movie with him. So I think he'll be great, he'll be great for Gambit, and he's a southerner too, he's not from New Orleans but he is a southerner and he understands that world, and you know Gambit loves New Orleans."

While she doesn't make any comment about 2016's X-men: Apocalypse, Bryan Singer has previously stated he wants to bring Gambit aka Remy Lebeau into the film, along with a new version of Nightcrawler. So it's not far fetched to think he'll pop up for a cameo before heading off into a Gambit solo film, which Donner also seems to be alluding to.

I know other X-men fans will disagree with me on this, but I'm really anxious to see what Tatum can do. More than that I'm eager to see exactly how they present him to even look like Gambit, because right now Tatum couldn't be more different than the suave, long-haired, stealthy cajun thief.  Then again, maybe I'm wrong because he's pulling off some wildly acrobatic stunts in Jupiter Ascending.
