First Look at Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in 'By the Sea'

After making a well-received directorial debut with In the Land of Blood and Honey, Angelina Jolie finds herself in the Oscar discussion with her follow-up, the WWII drama Unbroken. But it turns out she may be eying some gold next year, too, and she's bringing along new hubby Brad Pitt. Jolie is wrote and is directing By the Sea, which will see her reunited with Pitt on screen for the first time since Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Filming only just began a few days ago, and now EW has released the first images along with a full plot synopsis:

Set in France during the mid-1970s, Jolie plays Vanessa, a former dancer, and Pitt is her husband Roland, an American writer. As they travel the country together, they seem to be growing apart, but when they linger in one quiet, seaside town they begin to draw close to some of its more vibrant inhabitants, such as a local bar/cafĂ©-keeper (War Horse and A Prophet‘s Niels Arestrup, pictured below) and hotel owner (Richard Bohringer, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover.)

The most glamorous couple in Hollywood in an exotic local and colorful time period? What's not to like? No firm release date for By the Sea but you can expect to see it next year.

Angelina Jolie to Direct and Star with Brad Pitt in 'By the Sea'

When rumors began to surface a couple of months ago that Hollywood A-list couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were teaming up on their first project since 2005's Mr. & Mrs. Smith, not a lot was made of it because there were so few details. There wasn't even a title. All we knew was that she would be writing it and they both would star. It didn't have a studio at the time but obiously that wasn't going to last long with those two attached. Enter Universal Pictures.

Universal has announced they will distribute By the Sea, which Jolie will write and direct, co-starring alongside Pitt. Jolie made her directorial debut with the underrated Bosnian War film, In the Land of Blood and Honey, and will release her follow-up, Unbroken, on Christmas Day. By the Sea is being described as an "intimate, character-driven drama" and that's all we know right now. Jolie commented on finding a familiar home for her next film....

Jolie: “I am very happy to continue my relationship with Donna and the entire Universal team as I finish Unbroken and begin work on By The Sea.  They have created a very special place for storytellers, and I look forward to the continued passion and support they have provided to me as a filmmaker.”
