Marc Webb is 'Gifted'; Martin Campbell meets 'Sebastian X'; Robert Luketic takes 'The Takeaway'

With Sony's Spider-Man franchise still on the skids, Marc Webb is looking to fill in the gaps with some indie projects. Last month we learned he'd be directing Miles Teller in The Only Living Boy in New York, while at the same time he was eying the director's chair for the Fox Searchlight drama, Gifted. According to sources at The Tracking Board that deal has been struck although production is still in the earliest stages. We're also learning a little about the plot, which was penned by Tom Flynn and follows "a man fighting for custody of his brilliant niece against his mother, who believes the girl is not living up to her potential."

Green Lantern director Martin Campbell is set up to direct another graphic novel adaptation, Sebastian X. Produced by Gale Ann Hurd (The Walking Dead) and based on the comic by Michelangelo La Neve and artist Stuart Immonen, the story centers on "an elite cop who, after a near-fatal injury, is implanted with the memory of a notorious terrorist — Sebastian X — in order to infiltrate his group before its next attack." [THR]

Robert Luketic (Killers) is on board to direct The Takeaway, a romance-thriller based on a screenplay by Julia Cox. In what sounds like an update of The Thomas Crown Affair, the story centers on an art restorer who enters a whirlwind affair with her boss, who happens to be a world-class art thief.  Next on Luketic's list is Expendabelles, the female-led spinoff of The Expendables.

Marc Webb's Next Film is 'The Only Living Boy in New York'; Miles Teller in Talks to Star

Marc Webb has only directed a pair of The Amazing Spider-Man films, and yet they count as the bulk of his resume. After beginning his career in the world of music videos, Webb brought that experience to his debut feature, (500) Days of Summer, and became an instant sensation, earning him the Spidey gig. But with The Amazing Spider-Man 3 put on hold while Sony figures out where things went wrong with the franchise, Webb now has time to focus on other projects, and that's exactly what he's doing.

Variety reports that Webb's next film may be the indie drama The Only Living Boy in New York, which had been put on hold while he worked in the Spidey-verse. Even better, Miles Teller is said to be in talks to star in the film, thus giving it the star it needs to move forward. Penned by Allan Loeb, the story follows a young man who gets romantically involved with his overbearing father's mistress after first trying to end the affair.

Webb is also considering the Fox Searchlight drama, The Gifted, but it looks like The Only Living Boy in New York will take precedent. He had also been eying the spy thriller Cold Comfort, but that seems to be off the table for now.  Teller recently wrapped up a role as Reed Richards in Fox's Fantastic Four relaunch, and is about to lace up the boots for the boxing drama, Bleed for This.

Has Sony Bumped 'The Amazing Spider-Man 3' to 2017?

While the most recent crop of superhero movies have either performed up to expectations or well beyond them, one that really missed the mark was Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It may seem a little strange to say that a film currently sitting at $699M worldwide underperformed, but Sony really wanted more out of it, and the fact that critics and audiences largely trashed it didn't help. So perhaps it's not a complete shock to learn that plans for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 may have been pushed back just a little.

The report comes courtesy of AICN, who state that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has been moved to 2017, away from the June 10th 2016 date that had previously been set. At the same time Sony dated The Amazing Spider-Man 4 for May 4th 2018, and there were also Sinister Six and Venom movies in the mix somewhere. Previously we had heard both spinoffs would arrive before 'Spidey 4', but the possibility exists now that Sinister Six, which Drew Goddard is writing and directing, will take over the June 2016 date. That would give Sony and Marc Webb time to do some fine-tuning on a third Spidey movie. And then we could see Venom take over the 2018 date and basically take a fourth Spidey film off the table, because Webb doesn't seem to have any interest beyond his trilogy, anyway.

Sony is in a precarious position right now with their Spider-Man franchise. Generally it's the second film that really hits a stride but that didn't happen with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and now time needs to be spent figuring out where things went wrong. Shuffling the release dates around could be just what's needed to get back on track.

Marc Webb Talks 'Sinister Six', Kraven the Hunter, and 'The Amazing Spider-Man 3'

Despite mixed reviews and a general feeling The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took a step backwards, the film opened strong with $92M last weekend and $360M worldwide. Good news for Sony who have planned sequels through 2018, not to mention spinoffs for Venom and the Sinister Six. Drew Goddard will be directing Sinister Six when it eventually arrives, and we saw some of the groundwork laid for it, not to mention for 2016's The Amazing Spider-Man 3. From this point there are huge spoilers so just be warned.

So if you were watching closely then you probably noticed the metallic tentacles of Doctor Octopus and the wings of the Vulture in the background at OsCorp, clearly setting the characters up to appear later. But was that always the case? Marc Webb tells Grantland he kind of had to double-check...

Webb: "I had to talk to Drew Goddard and make sure these things were going to be played out in the future universe. There are some very specific plans, for example, for [Doc] Ock and for Vulture. Or the man in the hat at the end of the first movie. All those things emerge with varying degrees of emphasis."

That man who turned up at the end is The Gentleman, a character Webb hinted strongly last year would turn up in the film. In the series of graphic novels penned by Adam-Troy Castro it's The Gentleman who brings the Sinister Six together, just as he's doing in the movie with the help of Dane DeHaan's Harry Osborn. And who is likely to be joining the Green Goblin as part of the team? If Webb has his way it will be classic Spidey villain, Kraven the Hunter. He tells Comicbook.com...

Webb:  “Kraven. I like the idea of Kraven. The Vulture. Ock. I always thought the idea of Mysterio was interesting. Maybe Scorpion. But really, Kraven I think is kind of interesting.”

Kraven is a Russian big game hunter who teams with his half-brother the Chameleon to take down Spider-Man, considering him the ultimate prey. Later on after repeated failures, Kraven decides to take one more shot at Spider-Man before ending his own life, and actually emerges victorious for a time. He's also one of the founding members of the Sinister Six, at least the one put together by Doctor Octopus in the comics. The Amazing Spider-Man 2's credits tease seems to hint that Kraven and possibly Chameleon will be a part of the collection of villains, but there's some dispute whether that's true.

Lastly, Webb had to speak out about the decision to kill off Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy, the character dying in the battle with Green Goblin. In the comics there is some question about the circumstances of her death, such as whether her neck was broken by the Goblin or if Spidey's webs snapped her spine, but in the movie there's no doubt about it. And the impact of her death obviously has a huge impact on Peter Parker that will last through the next film. Webb didn't end things on a gloomy note, however, choosing to give Peter a ray of sunshine and a means of bouncing back at the end. He tells Movies.com...

Webb: "To me, I knew, even before the first movie, to the point that my involvement was predicated on the idea that we get to address this part of the comics. It was fascinating and what was daring and interesting about this comic. So I wanted to confront the death of Gwen Stacy. And I knew, and I believe, that you have to find meaning in that. That's the job, especially when you're dealing with kids, which is a huge part of the Spider-Man audience and was me, reading those comics. It was important to find meaning in loss and find meaning in that tragic event. And that required a dénouement. It's what Aunt May provided for Peter Parker that gives the whole meaning."

And of course, that leaves the door open for Peter to find somebody new in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Maybe we'll finally see Mary Jane Watson? Or perhaps Felicity Jones' Felicia Hardy will finally get something to do?

Webb: "Will Peter Parker love again? When [relationships] end, it's very difficult to imagine emerging from that. I think that’s, emotionally, where he's going to start off in the next movie."

The Amazing Spider-Man 3 opens June 10th 2016.

Review: 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Starring Andrew Garfield, Jamie Foxx, and Emma Stone

In today's Hollywood dominated by superhero movies, Marvel and Disney are the undisputed champs. There is no competition, really; they've got every studio twisting into knots to try and emulate the multi-franchised spinoff-heavy universe they've perfected with The Avengers. Sony, more than any other, has made it clear their intentions to ape Marvel's approach with Spider-Man, planning sequels long in advance and spinning off into Venom and Sinister Six movies. And so we have The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which takes the simple story of down-to-earth hero Peter Parker and overstuffs it to Rhino-sized levels.

Marc Webb's first film, released not even two years ago, was a good starting off point for the franchise. Andrew Garfield had the geeky cool charm of Peter Parker down pat, and his chemistry with Emma Stone (his real life girlfriend) was and remains off-the-charts. The introduction of Gwen as Peter's love interest was a refreshing twist from the Sam Raimi movies and despite the familiarity of Spidey's origin, there was a welcome lightness to it.  Goodness knows we didn't need another grim 'n gritty comic book movie. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 maintains a spirited sense of humor, but with a ton of characters to consider and even more subplots to juggle, nothing quite rounds into shape as it should.

One of the many storylines needing to be dealt with is the big secret surrounding the death of Peter's parents (Campbell Scott and Embeth Davidtz), and the reasons they abandoned him as a child. A thrilling mid-air sequence clues us in to the mystery, before we're literally dropped into Spidey's latest adventure. Now on the verge of graduation, Peter finds himself juggling his role as Spider-Man and as Gwen's boyfriend, this despite the promise to stay away he made to her late father. Betraying that promise weighs on him, and his relationship with Gwen has gone into on-again/off-again territory. She's considering a move to London if she's accepted into Oxford, which threatens to end their love forever. In the spandex realm he's keeping busy battling brutish Russian mobster Aleksei Systsevich played with comical exaggeration by Paul Giamatti. In the midst of stopping his rampage, Spidey saves unappreciated Oscorp employee Maxwell Dillon (Jamie Foxx), who quickly becomes obsessed with the hero. Dillon's friendly, if somewhat creepy, infatuation with Spidey turns dark for unconvincing reasons when he falls into a tank of electric eels (seriously) and is gifted with incredible electric powers. He also starts to look like the spawn of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Mr. Freeze and Watchmen'sDoctor Manhattan.

As if a wayward girlfriend, tons of family secrets, and a staticky blue supervillain weren't enough, Peter also has the sudden arrival of childhood friend Norman Osborn (Dane DeHaan), back from being sent abroad by his dying father (Chris Cooper). Now the head of Oscorp, Norman learns he's dying of the same degenerative disease, and the only way to possibly cure it is to get some of that Spider-Man blood flowing in his veins. It's the friendship between Peter and Norman that suffers most from the crowded plot, as we get basically one scene of the two reconnecting, professing their mutual angst, and then splitting off to become foes. Norman gets green, ugly, and desperately in need of a manicure, while Peter's attention is divided in a million different directions. And so is the script pieced together by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Jeff Pinkner, who fail to give the story any sort of focus. The weirdly ambiguous passage of time (weeks and months pass without explanation) is a symptom of the film's poor narrative structure, just as the lack of clear antagonists for Spidey. A hero is only as compelling as his enemy, and despite there being three bad guys to tussle with, none of them are given much shape. Electro goes from dorky to menacing sidekick at the drop of a hat, while Osborn is never written with any consistency. The betrayal he feels over his father's actions never comes through, nor do we really get a sense of Norman's friendship with Peter, which becomes a huge issue as secrets become unmasked, both literally and figuratively.

As for Peter and Gwen, their turbulence is something of a double-edged sword. The exploration of Peter's concern for her safety is believable and totally in keeping with his protective nature. He's already seen too many loved ones die over his costumed life and won't risk her, too. But as they repetitively bounce from one "should we or shouldn't we" conversation to the next, it doesn't give Gwen much to do until she's just another damsel in distress. Garfield and Stone are such a charming couple, genuinely having fun in one another's presence, that it's often enough to overlook the lack of forward momentum. Others in the supporting cast aren't given much to do, some to an embarrassing degree. Felicity Jones turns up as Felicia, presumably Felicia Hardy aka the Black Cat, and she clocks maybe three minutes as Osborn's aide. Chris Cooper might have given the film some real emotional weight if he had stuck around as Norman Osborn, but he only gets one scene. DeHaan, one of the finest young actors working today, does his best to internalize Harry Osborn's angst, but the script doesn't offer him enough opportunities.

As for whether or not Gwen meets the same fate as in the comics, well, those answers aren't going to be found in this review, but the decision Webb makes is bold and definitive. Despite the glaring problems he does do quite a few things right. He's certainly more confident in the use of CGI action, ramping up the speed and incorporating a number of dizzying visual splashes. The Times Square sequence alone impressively combines 360 degree roto-scoping and slo-mo to fully capture the scope of Electro's powers. Despite the heavy effects work and massive amounts of destruction, the action never feels cold or distant, a lesson Zack Snyder probably needs a refresher in. Webb does a good job of inextricably linking Spider-Man to New York's fate while also planting the seeds of future dissent.

Finally, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is both bloated and insubstantial, feeling like little more than a set-up movie for Sony's expansive plans. To paraphrase Spidey's famous credo; Webb has the great power to right the course in the next movie, and hopefully he'll take the responsibility to do just that.

Marc Webb Teases J. Jonah Jameson for Future 'Spider-Man' Films

If all of the viral promos for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are to be believe, we're going to be seeing a lot of Peter Parker's worst enemies show up at some point, everybody from Carnage to the Hobgoblin. While the virals shouldn't be considered confirmation of anything, one character who is frequently a part of them is J. Jonah Jameson, the Daily Bugle's editor-in-chief and hater numero uno when it comes to Spidey. The character wasn't seen in the first film, much to the chagrin of some fans, but Marc Webb made it sound as if we can expect Jameson to appear at some point...

Webb: "I like the idea very much of him coming up in the next film. It was more easy to accept a new Spider-Man than someone who could out do J.K. Simmons in that role, he is so iconic. That's something we've really talked about. Obviously I love that character because he poses such an interesting dilemma for Spider-Man. The answer is I don't know, but I think you can expect to see him in the future."

JK Simmons played Jameson in the Sam Raimi trilogy, and I don't envy whoever has to follow him in the role. The tenor of the virals has Jameson doing exactly what we'd expect; bashing Spider-Man and labeling him a criminal. That sounds like a natural direction for 2016's The Amazing Spider-Man 3 to go, don't you think? You can watch the entire Google+ Hangout with Webb and The Amazing Spider-Man 2's cast below.

Final 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Trailer and IMAX Poster, Plus a Major Event Teased in New One-Sheet

The phrase "marketing overkill" will never be heard in the halls of Sony Pictures. Practically giving away The Amazing Spider-Man 2 at this point hasn't stopped them from releasing just one more trailer, in case there's still someone out there who is on the fence about seeing it. And if there is someone on the fence, what's the problem? Electro's face not blue enough? Don't like the Rhino's suit?

More importantly, they also revealed two posters, one of which is a rather inspiring IMAX image from artist Matt Taylor, showing the wallcrawling hero soaring over the Manhattan streets.

The other image, however, will probably put a lump in the throats of long-time Spider-Man fans. It's a recreation of issue #121 of the original Spider-Man comic, and those who've read it know that's the issue Gwen Stacy meets her death at the hands of the Green Goblin. The speculation has been that Emma Stone's character would get killed off, and there are plenty of photos of her in the same outfit Stacy wore when she perished, but does this poster seal the deal?

My gut tells me Marc Webb is trying too hard to sell us on Gwen Stacy's death and to expect a huge swerve. Maybe Aunt May will eat it instead? The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens May 23rd, and frankly it can't get here soon enough. I want this movie to go away now.

'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Reveals One Final Trailer

There's been a concerted effort by Sony over the last few weeks of their crushing promo blitz for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, to shift the focus away from Jamie Foxx's Electro and onto Dane DeHaan's Harry Osborn. Perhaps they realized we had seen an awful lot of Electro and wanted to tone it down, or perhaps it means Osborn, who will get green and nasty as the Green Goblin, is going to play a much larger role than previously thought. And how might he fit in future sequels and the proposed villainous spinoffs, Venom and Sinister Six?

The answer to those questions isn't made clear in the final trailer for the superhero film, but Osborn definitely has a huge presence. As we know, Osborn is one of a handful of villains Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) will face as he uncovers the truth of his powers and the secret ties his family has to OsCorp. This one's building up to something huge, something not every character may walk away from.

Directed by Marc Webb and co-starring Emma Stone, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens May 2nd 2014.

'The Amazing Spider-Man 4' will Need a New Director

It's no secret that Marc Webb was reluctant to tackle The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, coming off only one feature film in the indie romance (500) Days of Summer. But he signed on for the long haul, recently confirming he'll stick around through the third film before Sony begins its expansion with Sinister Six and Venom. But there's also a fourth Spider-Man film that has been confirmed, and Webb addressed whether or not he'll be taking the camera for that one, too.

In a conversation with The Daily Beast, Webb says he hopes to be a part of future sequels, just not as a director...

Webb: "I’d like to be involved as a consultant, and I’ve already talked to these guys about it, but in terms of directing it, that will close out my tenure. I’ve had so much fun doing it, but after the third movie, it’ll be the time to find something else."

And part of that "something else" should include Cold Comfort, the true-life spy film he agreed to direct a few months ago.  The Amazing Spider-Man 3 won't open until June 10th 2016 so we've got a couple years of Webb's take on Spidey to go.

Marc Webb Talks Villain Overload Concerns in 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'

It tends to happen in superhero sequels that, in an attempt to make everything bigger than before, there will be an overloading of villains for the hero to contend with. I remember those concerns popping up way back in Batman Returns, and that was just with Catwoman and Penguin running around. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 had the same problem, one of many problems as it turns out, but Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has even more bad guys.

With Jamie Foxx's Electro, Dane DeHaan's Green Goblin, Paul Giamatti as the Rhino, plus villainous turns for Chris Cooper, B.J. Novak, and the ever present threat of OsCorp, that's an awful lot of villainy for one movie. Webb has heard your concerns, and during an interview with THR at SXSW, he told fans not to worry and that his film won't fall into the same trap as the previously mentioned movies...

Webb: “It's about writing. We're aware of those movies and the complaints people had. The main villain is Electro. Every other villain emerges around that. We were careful to make sure the stories entertained. You had to make sure to create obstacles that were difficult to overcome. We wanted to make the physical and emotional obstacles difficult. Rhino is in it for four minutes so it's a legitimate comparison, but when you see the movie, I'm confident.”

To be fair, having a ton of villains is to be expected considering the franchise's build to a Sinister Six movie, but it's good to know that Webb and Sony are being careful.  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens May 2nd 2014.

Marc Webb to Direct Spy Film 'Cold Comfort'

We know that Marc Webb's dance card is going to be full for awhile, at least through The Amazing Spider-Man 3 in 2016, but he's already looking beyond that and on to his next project. And nope, there's not a superhero in sight.

Deadline reports Fox has picked up the rights to the upcoming book, Cold Comfort (aka How To Catch A Russian Spy), as a directing effort for Webb. Co-written by Newsday journalist Ellis Henican and the book's subject who is keeping his name hidden, it's the "true account of an American civilian-turned-self-taught spy, who worked with the FBI to bring down a Russian intelligence agent on American soil." The comedic tone is said to be perfect for a comic leading man like Jonah Hill, so maybe that's who they'll seek out.

This one's a long way off, obviously, but it's good to know that Webb is looking beyond comic book movies. It seems like forever since he was the guy who directed (500) Days of Summer.

Marc Webb Confirmed to Direct 'The Amazing Spider-Man 3'; New Spidey Films Every Year

And you thought Spider-Man had enough trouble carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, he's also carrying Sony's future on his back. The studio is putting all of their eggs into the Spidey basket, expanding what Marc Webb originally called a trilogy into what is now a fourth film, plus Venom and Sinister Six spinoffs. It's a huge undertaking, one that Webb is ready to stick around for one more time.

Variety reports that Webb is now confirmed to direct The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which is expected to open June 6th 2016. Andrew Garfield will return, of course, although there's some serious doubt about Emma Stone making it that far. Paul Giamatti has also talked about suiting up as the Rhino for a third film. But this is hardly all that Sony has in store. According to Sony chief Amy Pascal, the franchise expansion means there will always be Spidey content right around the corner...

"We are expanding the ‘Spider-Man’ universe into ‘The Sinister Six’ and ‘Venom,’ so that we have ‘Spider-Man’ movies every year."

So there ya go. The never-ending stream of Spidey flicks continues when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens May 2nd.

New Trailer for 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Focuses on Electro

Perhaps Sony is starting to get a little nervous about Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy, because they are flooding the market with promos for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. A new trailer for the superhero film has been released, dubbed "Rise of Electro", and focusing on the villain played by Jamie Foxx. There's some new footage here expanding on scenes we've already seen plenty of (Times Square again??), but nothing that's going to generate any real buzz.

Starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Sally Field, Dane DeHaan, and Chris Cooper, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens May 2nd.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - Rise of Electro Trailer [VO|HD] by addictomovie

PLOT: It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: Oscorp.

Secrets Revealed in New 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Trailer

If you've been at the movies at all this week, especially if checking out Sony's Robocop, then you probably caught a new trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Well that trailer is now available online, and it seems to spoil one of the franchise's big secrets.

While much of the footage is stuff we've already glimpsed as part of the Super Bowl TV spot, there is some new stuff in there involving Richard Parker (Campbell Scott), Peter Parker's father who mysteriously disappeared. Based on this we can assume it has to do with OsCorp's creation of super-powered beings like Rhino (Paul Giamatti), Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan), and Electro (Jamie Foxx). But if you look close you'll also see what appears to be the tentacles of Dr. Octupus and metallic wings belonging to the Vulture. Could we be seeing those villains next?

Directed by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Sally Field, and Chris Cooper, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens May 2nd 2014.

New International Trailer for 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'

Now that Sony has unveiled their plan to grow the Spider-Man franchise beyond its humble little trilogy, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has taken on a whole new level of significance. We can probably expect the seeds of that expansion, which includes Venom and Sinister Six spinoffs, sewn in Marc Webb's upcoming sequel. And to help you suss out any clues Sony has been generous enough to drop a brand new international trailer.

There are bits of pieces of new footage in this German cut, with a good deal of it centered on the villain Electro (Jamie Foxx), Rhino (Paul Giamatti), and Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) who is getting awfully green around the gills. The pull of Spider-Man has always been how he balances his normal life with the burdens of being a hero, and in this trailer we see his occasionally awkward living arrangement with Aunt May (Sally Field), and glimpses of his growing relationship with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). Even if the comedic portions don't really work, Andrew Garfield has really taken the role and made it his ow. Too bad he apparently won't be sticking around much longer. Yeah, we'll see about that.

Directed by Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens May 2nd 2014.

Andrew Garfield Says He Has Nothing to Do with 'The Amazing Spider-Man 4'

It's become common practice for studios to build franchises way in advance, but Sony took it to another level when they set release dates through The Amazing Spider-Man 4 in 2018. It was a little odd because a trilogy had been the plan, and seemed to have a specific arc of stories in place, making the fourth movie appear to be something completely different. And now there's evidence to think that's exactly the case.

Spider-Man himself Andrew Garfield spoke to Yahoo! about The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and revealed he's only under contract through the third movie....

Garfield: “I mean I’m under contract for another one after this… as far as a fourth one? That’s not anything to do with me."

He then added...

Garfield: “But yeah, I think what we’re doing here is we’ve established the world. And now we get to really play inside that world. Use our imagination, and kind of expand. That’s what this film is.”

Could that expansion include somebody else under the Spidey mask? The idea of this really being a trilogy was then backed up by director Marc Webb...

Webb: “We did think about these movies from the very beginning as a series of movies. Really a trilogy to be totally frank.”

This could all just be a contractual ploy by Garfield but it seems a little early for that. It's probably more likely that Webb won't be around past a third film so he can move on to something that doesn't involve costumes and super powers. He's still pretty young in his career and only had one major directing gig before jumping into Spider-Man. If plans really are for Garfield to leave then bringing in another actor to play the part is dangerous. The same could be said of having a totally new character take on the Spider-Man mantle. But assuming it's the latter situation does that mean we could see the new character introduced in the next film?

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in IMAX 3D May 2nd 2014 and maybe we'll find out some answers then.

First Trailer for 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Spins Its Web

Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 is generally considered the best of his trilogy and one of the finest superhero movies ever made, as he confidently improved on the missteps of the first film and gave Peter Parker a credible foe to tangle with. While Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man was relatively well-received it was met with its fair share of criticism as well. Will the sequel take a similar leap forward in quality? The jury is still out whether or not it will be better, but the first trailer suggests it will definitely be bigger.

After days of images and teasers, the first full trailer has hit and right away it has a totally different feel than the first film, with Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) dealing with foes both obvious and ambiguous. As his relationship with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) is taken to the next level, Peter Parker is confronted by the evil Electro (Jamie Foxx) while we get a quick glimpse of the Rhino (Paul Giamatti) before he dons his armored suit. Dane DeHaan plays Parker's old friend Harry Osborn who seems to be following in the treacherous footsteps of his father Norman (Chris Cooper). Look closely and you'll see a brief shot of Spidey battling Harry after he claims the mantle of the Green Goblin.  No hint of the Sinister Six but we can assume the origins of their formation will start here. All in all it's impressive even if some scenes continue to resemble video games just a little too much.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings into your friendly neighborhood theater on May 2nd 2014.

New 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Photos Feature Electro

With the trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 webbing up the Internet tomorrow, Sony is pulling out all of the stops on the marketing campaign. They've released a handful of new images courtesy of USA Today which take us inside Electro's headquarters, which looks like a power plant. We also get what appear to be set photos of Andrew Garfield having fun in the Spidey suit, including one where he's riding atop the Rhino's getaway truck. In the accompanying interview, Marc Webb makes it clear he wanted to put a little bit of fun back into the franchise, saying Spidey is "really getting the thrills of that virtuosity. That’s going to be a side of him you’ll want to relish. This time, there’s a jollity we’ve really embraced.”

He also made an interesting remark about Oscorp, the corporation run by Spidey's nemesis Norman Osborn, who may or may not turn into the Green Goblin.

Webb: “Oscorp is the evil empire and will always be a major player in these films.”

So Oscorp, and thus the entire Osborn clan, will be at the center of the entire franchise. Good to know, and means we should be seeing a lot of Dane DeHaan and Chris Cooper.  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens May 2nd 2014.

Marc Webb Teases 'The Amazing Spider-Man 4' May Be an Ensemble

When Sony extended The Amazing Spider-Man franchise through 2018 and a fourth film, even before the sequel is properly finished, it changed what we thought we knew about Marc Webb's plans. All clues point to the Sinister Six factoring in somehow, and with a plethora of villains filling up the roster in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, there will be no shortage of characters for Webb to utilize. But as Webb continues to chat up the franchise, he also seems to be figuring out how a fourth movie can keep things fresh. As we saw with Sam Raimi's trilogy, the well tends to run dry by movie three, and it sounds like Webb's plan is to make 'Spider-Man 4' about more than just Peter Parker.

While talking to Crave Online, Webb seemed to tease that Spider-Man may not be the sole focus when the fourth movie comes around....

Webb: "Well, I think this was conceived of as a trilogy so there was a defined architecture to the story we were telling and we had sort of a rough outline of what was going to happen. I think [for] the fourth movie, what we’ve discovered is there are so many ancillary characters, that have enormous, cinematic potential that there may be other ways to exploit those characters, in a way that is exciting and fun and worthwhile. It might not just be a Spider-Man movie."

He went on to add...

Webb: "You know, what was fun about the comics is that there’s an entire sort of encyclopedia of characters and stories and histories and nuances and idiosyncrasies and off-shoots. I think that that is something that seems to be really successful and has a lot of potential so it’s sort of, as yet, undefined, but intentionally so."

Is Webb saying that 'Spider-Man 4' will be an ensemble? That's probably stretching things a little bit, but what it sounds like is Spidey may be forced to team up with one of his rivals to stop an even greater threat. While there are no shortage of characters Webb could thrust into the spotlight, the one that keeps coming to mind for me is Venom. We already know that Sony wants to make a Venom solo film, even targeting Josh Trank (Chronicle) as the director, and the character has been one of Spidey's most fearsome foes and a hero who has fought by his side.

While Electro (Jamie Foxx) is the sequel's primary villain, Webb has also introduced Paul Giamatti as Rhino, Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn, and Felicity Jones as another Spidey nemesis. Most of these characters will take on greater importance in future films, so it wouldn't be a total surprise if Venom were introduced in some small way, set aside to have a great impact later.

Whatever the case, we'll find out more when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens on May 2nd 2014.

Marc Webb Talks 'Spider-Man 2' Villains; Shailene Woodley on Mary Jane Role

It seems like there is a new major character revealed for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 every week, to the point where overcrowding the story is a real concern. But it sounds like Marc Webb has an idea on how to handle it, and the plan seems to be that many of the villains will have a tiny presence for now, but a much larger one later. Talking to MTV, Webb says that Jamie Foxx's Electro is the main heel to look out for....

Webb: "I'll tell you that the main villain in this movie is Electro. These movies are sort of on-going, and there are hints and teases of what's going to unfold in the future, but we were very focused on that simple conflict between Spider-Man and Electro. Electro is, to me, a really captivating and interesting villain because at this point, Spider-Man is really good at being Spider-Man. There is a level of virtuosity that is really fun to make and really fun to watch. Those abilities need to be challenged."

So it sounds like Paul Giamatti's Rhino will mostly be held for Spidey 3, or possibly Spidey 4 when some expect to see the Sinister Six form. Webb makes it sound as if something major could happen in the film, which even he was a little surprised Sony moved forward on so quickly....

Webb: "The fourth one was a little bit of a surprise," Webb admitted. "We always talked about there being a set of three movies, but there may be elements that expand outside Spider-Man that could fulfill that fourth film."

And remember that whole thing with Shailene Woodley's role as Mary Jane Watson being cut from the sequel? She's cool with it, and her reasons for it sound completely reasonable. She tells Movies.com...

Woodley: "Mary Jane was in four scenes – four scenes in the whole film, and it didn’t make sense. They’re introducing so many new characters; it really didn’t make sense to introduce such a vital character to the comic books in a movie that had so much else going on, so they’re holding off for future films.”

She went on to say that there's no screenplay for the third film yet, so there's no way to know if she'll have the time in her schedule to return. She has the Divergent franchise occupying her time now, and judging by the reaction from the Comic-Con panel, it's going to be huge.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens on May 2nd 2014.
