Shane Black's 'Predator' Film is a Sequel Not a Reboot

The big news to drop yesterday that had nothing to do with Harrison Ford's ankle was about a new Predator film from Iron Man 3 and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang director, Shane Black. At the time it was reported to be a reboot of the long-running franchise, which was disappointing news to those who were fans of the Robert Rodriguez-produced Predators from four years ago. But as it turns out the initial reporting was wrong and Black won't be doing a reboot at all.

Speaking with Collider, Black said he and writer Fred Dekker's plan was to do an "inventive sequel" and not a reboot of the franchise....

Black: “Why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine?”

Black added that he really can get into “the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology, rather than hitting the restart button. He also went on to say that he doesn't really like the idea of reboots which should make Predator fans anxious to see how the past stories come into play. Will Black be following up on Predators? Or is this a sequel to Predator 2? Only time will tell.

'Predator' Reboot On the Way from 'Iron Man 3' Director Shane Black

In the 27 years since Predator first hit theaters it still ranks as arguably Arnold Schwarzenegger's most memorable non-Terminator film, and the franchise has been running strong in various forms ever since. About four years ago Nimroad Antal gave us Predators, an extremely well done sequel that did a good job of making us forget the two Alien vs. Predator films. While there was brief talk of another sequel 20th Century Fox has decided to go the reboot route, enlisting a familiar face in Shane Black to direct it.

THR reports Black will direct a rebooted Predator film, while also drafting the treatment which his old Monster Squad co-writer Fred Dekker will script. This is an interesting "full circle" situation as Black, who also created the Lethal Weapon series, was asked repeatedly to do some writing on the original Predator script. While he frequently refused, the studio gave him a role in the movie (as Hawkins, dying an especially grizzly death) and continued to ask him. Black kept on refusing.

Who knows where this will fit into Black's schedule as he's trying to develop The Nice Guys, an action comedy that would star Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. He's also working on a long-gestating adaptation of Doc Savage with Chris Hemsworth eyed for the lead. While I'm disappointed we won't see a continuation of Predators the idea of Black taking a stab at the franchise has me eager to see his vision. Hopefully we'll hear more on those plans soon.

Rodriguez Stalks New Predator Franchise

Robert Rodriguez, the visionary auteur behind such great films as El Mariachi and Sin City, is preparing to bring back the baddest hunter in the known universe. Rodriguez is relaunching the Predator franchise, kicking things off with "Predators", which I assume will have the multi-gadgeted death dealer back on earth and hunting down humans. Rodriguez has already written the script, but no word has been released on when the film is set to hit theaters, as Rodriguez is pushing around multiple projects at the moment.

Ok, I'm probably the biggest fan of the original Predator film. There's no simpler concept than the idea of one man vs. an unstoppable killing machine. But that film sported an amazing cast featuring the Governator, Carl Weathers, Bill Duke, amongst others. The sequel I was not all that invested in, with Danny Glover's old ass limpin' around fighting off the Predator with a standard revolver. Whatever! The Alien vs. Predator movies have been disappointing also, and at this point of so many years without a quality Predator film I'm a little bit skeptical about this project. The fact that Rodriguez is handling it gives me confidence, as the guy knows how to draft a mean script and will certainly give the film a certain visual flair. I am interested in knowing who the Predator's main adversary will be. If it's just a bunch of no-name kid like in the AVP movies then they might as well forget it.
