Doug Liman in Talks to Direct Remake of WWII Soccer Film, 'Victory'

World Cup fever is sweeping the world everywhere but here in America, however that's not going to stop Hollywood from making a bunch of soccer movies. Coming off rave reviews for his sci-fi action flick Edge of Tomorrow, Doug Liman is now eying a remake of the 1981 WWII soccer movie, Victory.

Victory was originally directed by John Huston and featured a ton of real-life soccer stars, including Pele himself, alongside Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine, and Max Von Sydow. The film was a remake of a Hungarian film and centered on Allied POWs forced to compete in a soccer match against the prison guards, knowing they'll be met with death if victorious. The story is very loosely based on a real-life event that has come to be known as "The Death Match".  It's one of the few movies on the sport I actually really enjoy despite it having one of the worst, most improbable endings ever.  Hey, just like Edge of Tomorrow. Go figure.

Gavin O'Connor, who directed the uplifting U.S. Olympic hockey film Miracle, is on board to write the script making this an even more promising project. Next up for Liman is an adaptation of the Splinter Cell video game with Tom Hardy set to star. [THR]

'Snow White and the Huntsman' Sequel Director Shortlist Includes Gavin O'Connor, Frank Darabont, & Andy Muschietti

Despite the first moving only being memorable for the scandalous tryst between Kristen Stewart and director Rupert Sanders, Universal long ago decided to push forward on a Snow White and the Huntsman sequel. $400M worldwide apparently buys sequels to forgettable movies nowadays, and with Sanders definitely out (what's he been doing lately?) a handful of new contenders are being sought to replace him.

Deadline reports Gavin O'Connor, Frank Darabont, and Andres "Andy" Muschietti are on the short list to helm the fairy tale sequel, which will miss its proposed 2015 date and target 2016 instead. O'Connor last directed MMA flick Warrior and rode to the rescue on Jane Got a Gun, while Darabont pitched in on the Godzilla screenplay. The last film he directed was Stephen King adaptation, The Mist, which is campy and awful in all the best ways. Muschietti is the relatively new guy who made a splash with last year's surprise horror, Mama. He recently dropped out of directing The Mummy reboot so he may be looking for something to take its place.

Nobody's really begging for this movie to happen at all so don't be surprised if Universal takes their time trying to get it right. Besides, they'll have to wait until Chris Hemsworth is done swinging a hammer in Avengers: Age of Ultron before he ever picks up his axe.

Gavin O'Connor Directing Mountain Action Flick 'Massacre In the Himalayas'

After his MMA flick Warrior somehow came and went without anybody noticing despite having Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton in the lead roles, Gavin O'Connor was called upon to save the flailing western, Jane Got a Gun. Now that it's done and due to hit theaters next year, O'Connor is moving on to his next project, a mountain adventure film based on real life event.

Variety reports O'Connor will direct Massacre In the Himalayas, which is based on a Men's Journal article by Freddie Wilkinson. In what sounds like Cliffhanger meets Lone Survivor, the true story surrounds a group of mountain climbers scaling the K2 in Pakistan when they come under attack by terrorists.

It would sound ridiculous if it wasn't true, and how O'Connor approaches the material will be very interesting to see.

Gavin O'Connor Takes Over for Ben Affleck on 'Tell No One' Remake

Major League Baseball may not have an award for the league's best pinch hitter, but if there was one for Hollywood directors it would go to Gavin O'Connor. The Warrior director was the guy to replace Lynne Ramsay when that whole Jane Got A Gun thing blew up. And now that it's finished, he's moving in to replace Ben Affleck on the long-developing Tell No One remake.

Variety reports that O'Connor will bring Harlan Coben's acclaimed crime-mystery novel to the big screen, which Guillaume Canet adapted into an excellent French film back in 2006. Chris Terrio, Affleck's writing partner on Argo, penned the script which centers on a man whose wife goes missing and he is the prime suspect. However, eight years as he's suspected in another killing, clues begin to emerge that his wife may actually be alive. It's a great story, one that translated well as a French movie and should work even better over here.

No word on when this will start rolling, but Warner Bros. and Universal have been shepherding this for awhile so it should be soon.

Denzel Washington confirmed for 'The Equalizer'

You have to give it up to Denzel Washington. For all the bellyaching I and others have done about him not really stretching himself as an actor anymore, the fact remains he's settled into a comfortable zone of highly successful, mature action flicks that keep him in the spotlight. And who knows? Maybe he'll shut guys like me up in November when Robert Zemeckis' Flight hits theaters, as it looks like the kind of film we haven't seen from Washington in years.

Back in December we learned that Sony was targeting Washington for The Equalizer, based on the 1980s TV series about an ex-agent(originally played by Edward Woodward) looking to atone for past sins by offering his protective and security services free of charge. Deadline reports that not only is the film now green lit, but that an April 2013 production date is set. Now the search for a director begins, and the names they're looking at show their commitment to making this more than just another mediocre remake of a cult TV show. Nicolas Winding Refn(Drive), Gavin O'Connor(Warrior), Gareth Evans(The Raid), and Pierre Morel(Taken) are all on the wishlist. All four would bring something totally different to the table, so whoever they choose is going to tell us a lot about the direction Sony is planning.

Washington is set to star with Mark Wahlberg in the action flick, 2 Guns, and there's also a comedy remake of Uptown Saturday Night alongside Will Smith. I'm really looking forward to that latter one, so let's hope this doesn't interfere with it.

Sure Shots: Cameron Diaz; Jaume Collet-Serra; Gavin O'Connor

* Cameron Diaz and Benicio Del Toro are set to star in the terrible sounding action/comedy, Agent: Century 21. It's not as cool as it sounds, trust me. Diaz will play a divorcee and real estate agent who, feeling like she can't catch a break, decides to take on a dangerous job for her boss which lands her in the middle of a Mexican drug war. >sigh< Del Toro will play the leader of a cartel who takes pity on her and offers her a chance to save her own life if she can avenge the death of his son. You're probably thinking Robert Luketic(Killers) is the director, right? Nope. It's some Danish guy named Adam Hashemi making his debut. [Variety]

* It's been a roller coaster couple of years for Jaume Collet-Serra, after finding some acclaim for his schlocky horror flick, Orphan. He followed that up by directing Unknown, which was a tepid thriller starring Liam Neeson. It did respectable, early season business, but not many liked it. Probably because Neeson didn't kick a lot of ass in it. He was next set to direct Warner Brothers' live-action Akira, and we all know how that panned out. He also lost out to the unproven Noam Murro in the race to direct 300: Battle of Artemisia. With all else having failed, Collet-Serra is teaming back up with Neeson for action thriller, Non-Stop. Yes, the film sounds as generic as the title suggests. Basically it's Taken on a jet plane, as Neeson is forced to stop some sort of threat during an international flight. Yeah, you can pretty much pencil in a January or February release date for this one.

* Gavin O'Connor got screwed when his great MMA flick, Warrior, was soundly ignored by audiences last year. It was a much smarter, deeper, guy flick than many give it credit for. That's basically been a trend for O'Connor, who will now try to make something out of Yakuza, an action flick set in the post-Tsunami criminal underworld of Japan. The story follows an American intelligence officer who squares off against a Yakuza godfather. O'Connor and Josh Fagin will rewrite the script, initially penned by Chap Taylor(Changing Lanes). Gavin O'Connor to direct Channing Tatum's 'Peter Pan' movie, 'Neverland'

There are two different Peter Pan films floating around out there, both with rather unique twists on J.M. Barrie's novel about the boy who wouldn't grow up. The first is Pan, directed by Ben Hibon and starring Aaron Eckhart, which reimagines Pan as a serial killer being tracked by detective Captain Hook. It's strange to me, too, but kinda inspired in a twisted sortof way. The other is being produced by Channing Tatum, and once went by the boring title of Peter Pan Begins, now simply known as Neverland.

The film has been in the works since last March, and as of right now Tatum has no plan to don the little green tights and start flying around. Not much has been heard on it since, but with the actor set to make a big splash with 21 Jump Street, the ball appears to be rolling pretty quickly. Variety reports that Gavin O'Connor, director of Warrior and the still-awesome hockey drama, Miracle, will step behind the camera. Based on a script by Billy Ray(Breach), who also had a hand in writing The Hunger Games, the story is an origin tale that may include Peter Pan and Captain Hook as brothers. Seriously.

Even with a director lined up, it's still fairly early into this one. No start date has been set, and casting has yet to begin, although I wouldn't be shocked to see Tatum fit in there somewhere. Maybe as Hook?

Mark Romanek turns down The Wolverine directing gig

Last month when we learned the eight finalists to replace Darren Aronofsky as director of The Wolverine, my clear  cut choice was  Mark Romanek. He might not be as big of a name as some of the others on the list, but he has a style reminiscent of Aronosfky's, and it would've been interesting to see what he might've brought to the clawed Canucklehead's adventure in Japan. Unfortunately it looks like I'm sh*t outta luck, because Romanek revealed to Digital Spy that he turned the job down. Poo.

Romanek: "That's just one of those stories that floated around. I was on their list, I received the script months ago. It didn't seem like my kind of thing.
"That script was a terrific version of that kind of thing, but not something I felt really passionate about."

Well at least he thought Christopher McQuarrie's script was pretty good. That makes me feel a lot better. The rest of the names left on the list don't do a hell of a lot for me, though. Antoine Fuqua(Brooklyn's Finest), Justin Lin(Better Luck Tomorrow), Jose Padilha(Elite Squad), Doug Liman(Go), Gavin O'Connor(Miracle), James Mangold(Walk the Line), and commercial director Gary Shore are all that's left.

A friend of a friend tells me that the choice is going to be Gavin O'Connor, which would be a solid choice. His latest film, Warrior, looks fantastic. It stars Joel Edgerton(Animal Kingdom) and Tom Hardy(The Dark Knight Rises) as brothers headed for an MMA showdown.

The list of directors for The Wolverine narrowed down to eight

The pang of loss still hits me when I think about it too much. When Darren Aronofsky had to drop out of directing Hugh Jackman in The Wolverine, the opportunity to see what the wildly creative auteur could do with a big budget comic book flick. 20th Century Fox has been pretty relaxed in seeking out a replacement, given additional time due to Hugh Jackman's schedule and all the turmoil going on in Japan right now. The bulk of Christopher McQuarrie's script takes place in the Land of the Rising Sun, a factor which contributed to Aronofsky's departure. So far we've heard Duncan Jones(Source Code) mentioned as a possible choice to direct, as well as David Slade(30 Days of Night), but neither accepted. Now Variety reports that Fox has narrowed their list of candidates down to eight, a healthy mix of indie and mainsteam.

The contenders are: Doug Liman(The Bourne Identity); Jose Padilha(Elite Squad); Antoine Fuqua(Training Day); Mark Romanek(Never Let Me Go); Justin Lin(Fast Five); Gavin O'Connor(Miracle); James Mangold(Knight and Day); and Gary Shore(???)

Out of this bunch, Romanek probably is closest to Aronofsky's indie sensibilities, and I'd love to see what the guy who made the disturbing One Hour Photo could do with a loner like Wolverine. But then part of me also wants to see a relatively fresh face take over. Padilha is a fast rising star who is already attached to the Robocop reboot, and could bring something new to the job. Gary Shore specializes in commercials, a popular launching pad of late. Fuqua, Liman, and Mangold are old hands and would be solid but likely wouldn't' add anything exciting. Lin is such a departure from Aronofsky that it just seems like a bad fit. I think I'm leaning towards Romanek here.

What do you think? Who would you like to see take over The Wolverine?

Trailer Time: Warrior, starring Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton

While I'm sure most people will be jazzed about the idea of seeing Tom Hardy getting ripped and kick ass again like he was in Bronson, I just think it's cool we'll be getting an MMA film that actually looks half way decent. Warrior is directed by Gavin O'Connor(Miracle), and features Hardy as an ex-Marine who convinces his alcoholic daddy(Nick Nolte) to train him in the brutal world of cage fighting. There's just one big problem. His estranged bro(Joel Edgerton, Animal Kingdom) is a fighter as well, and the two seem destined for a big time showdown.

The cast is solid, and I know more than a few folks dying to see the two screen hunks Hardy and Edgerton trying to rip eachother's heads off. Me, I'm just hyped over the presence of TNA pro wrestler(and Olympic gold medalist!) Kurt Angle, who has a major role as a top MMA brawler.  Consider me extremely bullish on this one.  Warrior is due to hit theaters on September 9th! Check out the trailer below.
