3. How to Train Your Dragon
If you haven't hopped aboard your pet dragon and joined in on Dreamworks' high flying adventure, you're missing out on the best animated film of the year. A truly wondrous experience.
2. Date Night
We've all had our share of bad dates, but rarely do they end with car chases, corrupt cops, conniving babysitters, and armed gunmen. Steve Carell and Tina Fey are the nicest, boring suburban couple ever, and all they wanna do is have a relaxing dinner to themselves. It's hard not to root for two of the funniest people on the planet, and even though the plot is a little bit weak, these two comedic powerhouses make Date Night a perfect date night flick.
1. The Runaways
No, it's not perfect. It's pretty standard rock 'n roll band crash 'n burn scenario. But there's an undeniable energy coursing through every second of The Runaways. Kristen Stewart displays a heretofor unseen charisma as legendary girl rocker, Joan Jett. The real head turner though is Dakota Fanning in her most grown up role yet as the sexed up adolescent lead singer of the band, Cherie Curry.
DVD Pick of the Week: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
Was there ever any doubt? It was in my top 10 of 2009 for a reason. The combustible combination of eccentric director Werner Herzog with Nicolas Cage giving his wildest and best performance in years reaped amazing results. Cage stars as a highly recognized cop in post-Katrina New Orleans, stuck in a perpetual drug induced haze that sends his life and career in a tailspin. Herzog's crazy, lingering camera might throw some people off, and Cage at his most unrestrained could be a dealbreaker for some. But if you're looking for something a little bit off-kilter yet powerful, this is it.
