The first I heard of Lars Von Trier's upcoming sci-fi film, Melancholia, was back in April when Kirsten Dunst surprisingly signed on for a role. I still have a hard time imagining her working with the notoriously gruff and unrelenting director. She replaced Penelope Cruz, who ran into scheduling issues with Pirates of the Caribben 4. The film has been described as a "psychological disaster" film. Can't all Von Trier films be described like that in some small way?
At a press conference announcing the start of shooting, Von Trier introduced the full cast for the film. Most of which we already knew were aboard: Kirsten Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland, John Hurt, both Alexander and Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Charlotte Rampling, Brady Corbet, and Udo Kier.
We still don't have much of a clue what the film is about, thanks to Von Trier's tight lipped personality. Frankly, I don't want to know. I didn't know much of anything before I saw Antichrist or any of his other films, and while they are admittedly tough to watch they are rewarding. I can't wait for this, as the sci-fi genre is my favorite and I'm very interested in seeing what Von Trier does to it.
