'Monsters' director to helm Godzilla remake
It was way back in March when Legendary Pictures(the production house behind Christopher Nolan's Bat-flicks) announced that they were relaunching Godzilla for American audiences, with obvious hopes of turning the giant lizard into a franchise moneymaker once again. Since then news has been scarce other than some brief rumblings about Tim Burton possibly coming aboard, but that never panned out. Now word comes down that possibly the perfect directing choice has been made to helm the project: Gareth Edwards.
Gareth Edwards probably isn't going to ring any bells to most folks, but his stock has been seriously on the rise ever since his low budget creature feature, Monsters, was released last year. Heatvision says that the 35 year old Brit is close to inking a deal that would allow him to produce and direct the film.
Why is Edwards such a great choice? Well, not only did he write, direct, and do all the special effects for Monsters, but he did it with a crazy low budget rumored to be around $15,000. The ultra-realistic special effects have led him to be compared to Neil Blomkamp(District 9). I can see why people say that, even if I didn't think Monsters was all that great. My problem with it lied mostly with the script. The things Edwards was able to achieve under such budgetary constraints makes me very interested in seeing what he can do with the full financial support of some big name players behind him.
