Even for a worldwide phenomenon like Justin Bieber, concert movies tend to die rapid fire deaths. So Paramount Studios has made what I think is an ingenious move by unveiling a special Director's "Fan Cut" version of Never Say Never to open this Friday, February 25th. The film will feature an added 40+ minutes of footage, and runs exclusively on 3D screens for only one week. Tickets go on sale tonight at 8pm eastern, where you'll no doubt be able to find my friends Kevin McCarthy, John Nolan, and Josh Hylton waiting in line to get theirs.
Director Jon Chu is said to have cut this version to be more "fan-centric", using the hours of footage and notes he took from discussions with Bieber fans to figure out what they wanted to see more of. It's a smart way to make the singer's fans feel more like a part of his clique, which to me is just plain ol' good marketing. I love it.
I've heard nothing but good things about Never Say Never, and admittedly the walls I've put up against seeing it are slowly crumbling. I can pretty much assure you it won't be this edition, as I can barely stomach 4-minutes of one of his songs much less 40 minutes worth. Otherwise I got no ill will against the kid, and have come to realize that the bulk of his fan base isn't teenaged girls as you might expect, but mostly 40 year old cougars.
After two weeks of release, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never has grossed an estimated $48M domestically at the box office.
