The Farrelly Brothers didn't exactly remind folks of their glory days with their latest flick, Hall Pass. It failed to connect with a lot of folks and lost out over the weekend to a nearly month old movie about gnomes. However to me the Farrellys are integral to the comedy landscape, because we can't just have Judd Apatow and his buds making similarly toned movies unopposed. So while their long gestating The Three Stooges flick is starting to pick up steam, the brothers may also be considering going back to the movie that put them on the map.
While at a presser in Australia for Hall Pass, Bobby Farrelly made mention that another Dumb and Dumber may be in the works. Moviehole has the quote....
“[Dumb and Dumber] has run a bunch of times on TV in the states, and kids will come up and they’ll be able to quote lines from that – lines that I’ve long forgotten. If we could get those two guys back together, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels that might be a worthwhile sequel – and that ball is in motion. We’re starting to think about what those two dimwits would be doing twenty-years later in life, and hopefully we’ll be able to come up with something worthy of a sequel.”
The original 1994 comedy was a smash hit, earning over $240M and cementing the Farrellys as a comedic force, known for outlandish, sophomoric toilet humor. An ill advised prequel was produced in 2003, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, and was savaged by both fans and critics. Terrible movie. An animated sequel of sorts was also released in 1995 and ran for 13 episodes.
Clearly this all just on the Farrellys minds right now with nothing set in stone. If the plan is really to revisit Harry and Lloyd as older men, then I bet there won't be any problem getting Carrey and Daniels back. Dumb and Dumber is a movie I've been intending to watch again for years but never got around to it. I remember not really diggin' it all that much when it came out, but a large part of that was the way my friends hyped it up to no end. Maybe after not having seen it in over 15 years I'll have a different outlook on it.
