Ryan Reynolds says Deadpool film "still in the works"
Deadpool is the movie superhero fans really want to see Ryan Reynolds make. Period. I'm as much a fan of Green Lantern as anybody, but even so Deadpool is more in tune with the actor's natural gifts. Super athletic and quick with a verbal barrage of jokes and insults(he's not called the "merc with a mouth" for nothin'), Deadpool is primed to be the next big box office smash. If it ever happens. Ever since the character was so badly mismanaged in X-men Origins: Wolverine, reports of a spinoff had fanboys drooling.
All the pieces began to come together. Reynolds was particularly vocal and enthusiastic about the film, which would see a version of Deadpool closer to the one people actually like, y'know, like from the comic. He'd be a jaw jackin', 4th wall breakin' anti-hero. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers of Zombieland, were brought in to draft a script. Robert Rodriguez(El Mariachi) was brought in to direct, but soon dropped out when his schedule became too hectic. That would soon become a recurring theme. Adam Berg was briefly attached but nothing's ever come of that. Then Reynolds signed on to headline another comic book adaptation, R.I.P.D. Not to mention Warner Brothers pushed ahead on their plans for multiple Green Lantern sequels. Along with his commitments to other non-superhero stuff like Safe House and The Change-Up, Deadpool just got pushed further and further on the backburner. Frankly, it looked like Deadpool was never going to happen.
In the latest issue of Empire Magazine, Reynolds addressed the issue that's had Deadpool fans scratching their heads...
Reynolds: "Deadpool’s still in the works,” he insists. “I’m not sure how logistically it works in terms of scheduling, but yeah, I want it to happen.”
While some of the projects that kept Reynolds away from Deadpool have now been completed, he's still got a ton on his plate. Not to mention if his time ever does totally free up, they're still in need of a director. Rodriguez would've been a perfect fit(see his Machete for how Deadpool could've played out). The one thing that's been obvious from the start is that Reynolds really wants to make this movie, and as long as he remains positive about it, I expect we'll get to see the wise-crackin', taco lovin' assassin' on the big screen some day.
