The last thing we heard about Xerxes, the sequel to 300 it looked like Zack Snyder wasn't going to be directing. That would've been odd because the man basically made his career on the 2007 film, and has been integral to the sequel's development. Frank Miller hammered out the graphic novel version, and Snyder came in afterwards to cook up the adaptation. All seemed to be moving pretty smoothly, but then we started hearing about Guy Ritchie being brought in to replace Snyder. That was debunked shortly thereafter, but Warner Brothers' apparent reasoning remained in that they wanted Snyder to focus his energies on Superman. Logical. So while Ritchie might not be taking over, Superman still looms pretty large in the background as a potential Snyder roadblock.
MTV had a chance to speak to producer Mark Canton about the sequel, and he basically says we can stop calling the thing Xerxes now....
Canton: “It’s not called Xerxes anymore. We don’t know [what it's called] yet.”
Ok. Just don't give it some cheesy title like...'302' or something like that. How about something simple? Like...300: Marathon War? The story will focus primarily on the massive battle between Athens and Persia.
But what about Snyder? Will he be back? Canton seems to be trying to have it both ways in his answer...
Canton: “Soon we’ll know what we’re doing. But I don’t see us waiting two years to make the movie and Zack is very much at the helm of it at the same time.”
Not much of an answer there, but probably the best he can do given the circumstances. Waiting for Snyder to finish Superman would be out of the question because I'm not sure how much of a shelf life 300 has in people's minds. They really need to strike as soon as possible, but that pretty much takes Snyder out of the equation. My best guess? He'll stay on as producer, and possibly get to hand pick his successor.
