Javier Bardem in final talks for The Dark Tower

Well shut me up. I've expressed mostly skepticism that Javier Bardem would want to commit himself to a project as large as The Dark Tower would be. Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer's plan for adapting Stephen King's massive fantasy/western epic is an ambitious one. The tale of enigmatic gunslinger Roland Deschain would be spread across three feature films plus a couple of television seasons. Pretty much anybody who gets involved can be counted out of doing any other movies for awhile.  A few weeks ago, Grazer said that Bardem was psychologically locked for the role, but no news of a deal came forth. Until today, that is.

Deadline reports that Bardem and Universal have entered final talks, with the deal covering the TV show and the first theatrical film. There are options for the next two flicks, assuming the first is a success. So those of you hoping to see Bardem in the upcoming James Bond film might as well dash those notions now. Production on The Dark Tower could begin as soon as September, based on a script by Akiva Goldsman.

Not having read The Dark Tower is something I've been meaning to rectify for a very long time, but commitment issues have steered me away. First published in 1982, the seven novel series is considered by Stephen King to be his magnum opus. It takes place in a world similar to the Old West, but contains elements of fantasy and sci-fi.
