The Hobbit news: Luke Evans as Bard the Bowman; Benedict Cumberbatch voicing Smaug the Dragon

In The Hobbit, Bard the Bowman is the key human role of the entire story. He's the guy who best represents all the virtues of Man, defeating Smaug the Dragon and basically saving everybody's bacon. When Benedict Cumberbatch was confirmed to be a part of the film a couple of weeks ago, I like most people assumed he'd be up for the Bard role. Turns out that wasn't the case at all, but the reality may be even better.

Deadline confirms that Luke Evans will take on the role in Peter Jackson's upcoming prequel to The Lord of the Rings. Evans has been on a shot streak ever since his appearance in Robin Hood and Clash of the Titans last year. He'll be seen next in Paul W.S. Anderson's The Three Musketeers

As for Cumberbatch, the Bard role might be out of reach but what he'll actually be doing is still pretty cool. He'll be voicing the villainous Smaug, the dragon that destroys the town of Dale and kills the last Lord of the town, giving rise to the Bard who ultimately slays him.

I've never actually heard Cumberbatch speak,  since I've never seen Sherlock, the show he shares with fellow Hobbit star Martin Freeman. But I'm guessing his voice must be pretty impressive to voice the massive dragon. Deadline also notes that Cumberbatch will be taking on the voicing role for another character, The Necromancer. You can look it up yourself if you don't know what part he plays in the film, but I won't reveal it here.

The first part of The Hobbit opens on December 14th 2012.
