Academy, please reserve a spot in the Best Picture and Director categories for Steven Spielberg's War Horse. The first trailer for the film has been released, and it looks like a masterpiece and a definite Oscar contender. Based on Michael Morpurgo's 1982 novel, the story follows a horse named Joey, sold to the French cavalry at the outbreak of WWI by his owner, Albert. With both glimpsing terrible images of death and destruction, they each set out on an odyssey to be reunited.
If the images of Joey's lonely quest through history isn't enough to get your eyes a bit damp, then I'm betting that sweeping score by John Williams will. Jeremy Irvine, Niels Arestrup, Emily Watson, Benedict Cumberbatch, and David Thewlis are just part of a fantastic cast. War Horse will hit theaters right in the Academy Awards sweet spot on December 28th.
