The Sunday Drive: 7/10/11

3. Transformers: Dark of the Moon
It's big, loud action in the Michael Bay tradition, as the Autobots and Decepticons bring their war to an explosive, world shattering conclusion! Brought to you in glorious, beautiful 3D.

2. Beginners
The most unique comedy of the summer and possibly the year, Beginners stars Ewan McGregor as a son coping with the death of his father, who came out as gay at the age of 75. A superlative, deeply personal film full of heart, quirky laughs, and romance.
1. Horrible Bosses
If Jennifer Aniston as a predatory sex pot lusting after Charlie Day(It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) isn't enough to make you want to pay to see Horrible Bosses, then how about Jamie Foxx sketchy "murder consultant" with a hilarious name so profane I can't even type it here? Consider this to be Office Space if done by the Coen Brothers or Alfred Hitchcock.

DVD Pick of the Week: 13 Assassins
The latest from prolific director Takashi Miike has frequently been compared to The Seven Samurai , which I think is fair. In terms of look and style, Assassins could be a modern day revisiting of Akira Kurosawa's classic tale. But in tone, Miike's penchant for grisly violence and elaborate action sequences takes over, and I'm definitely not complaining. By the time you read this, Miike will likely have finished three more movies, but 13 Assassins may just be his best yet.
